No doubt about it! There hasn't been one other American fighter who has had the kind of crossover success that DLH had. No one is even close. Not Floyd or manny although they owe DLH A LOT for opening those doors.
Without question Floyd did help with those numbers but you got to be kidding yourself if you think that he was the draw in that fight.
Yes, and DLH picked up his core base of casual fans from the audience that watches Olympics not so much boxing. The dude had the best sob story ever and was one of the big "stories" in the Olympics. Young boy overcoming life's obstacles. The guy was a kid winning his gold medal for his mother! -How much more apple pie and all American can you get than that. Half of America jumped at the chance to see what happened to that boy when he entered the professionals.
He was. Everybody was drawn in to see him lose. Compare waht De La Hoya did with Trinidad compared to with Floyd? There is no comparison.
1. Oscar De La Hoya - $610.6 million on 12.6 million buys (18 events) 2. Mike Tyson - $545 million on 12.4 million buys (12 events) Tyson got nearly as many buys as Oscar depite only having 2/3 as many events as him. When Tyson fought everyone watched, even if he it was just some scrub.
He's got to be kidding..I mean I would credit DLH, GOLDEN BOY promotions and then Mayweather for its success. What were the #s for Mayweather's last 3 PPV fights prior to DLH fight, and what were DLH's #s for his last 3 prior to Mayweather fight. :deal
Oscar made more money, and was able to have more PPV fights. So Tyson drew more at one particular point, but Oscar broke PPV records. Biggest PPV fight More PPV fights. More $$ generated.
I don't really know if Floyd was the big reason. A lot of people at that time had no ****en idea who Floyd was. Not hating on Floyd but Floyd helped to **** people off after awhile. So many casual fans were angry after that fight that they spent money to watch that. I think DLH's ko of Mayorga might have been a big boost in the audience as well, can't forget that, and how much of a hit that 24/7 had become. Anyway, one thing I do know, this was the last fight the local bars showed on PPV. After that fight every single bar that didn't charge covers for the event said they would no longer show PPVs.
People seem to forget how exciting DLH's fights were. Gatti, Quartey, Vargas, Mayorga, Trinidad, Gonzalez, Whitaker, Mosley, the list goes on and on. Damn what a resume.
That's because DLH had like 7 more PPVs and he's barely beating Tyson. Tyson is BY FAR the king, he made more money than DLH in less than fights and is only being beat by DLH in numbers by like 1.7 million despite DLH being on 7 more PPVs.
Even DLH skimped on some PPVs that didn't have him doing so hot. Floyd and Pac have names today that can help them break 1 million. Cotto, Mosley, Each other. If other fighters become somewhat bigger draws they can push 1 million.
