I don't know if its Osca'rs best fight, but definately his most dramatic fight. That last left hook was murderous and so ****en fast. The beauty of the punch, and what makes this moment so dramatic, is it comes right at the end of Merchant saying why can't DLH finish Vargas. As soon as he finishes his statement the punch comes out of nowhere. Good stuff.
this was one of my fav's ...another ****face that got what he deserved. [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CRYncaT9RXc&feature=related[/ame]
much props to those hwo have commented on this. i really under estimated the power of this fight . these two guys really wanted to end each others night so quickly. vargas had alotta skill and power and really was in control for a short time but de la hoya really worked that weight well. fights like this really encapsulate what boxing is really up to.
perhaps from his parents? I think they were mostly if not all the time spanish speaking. I don't really notice it from him though.
De La Hoya vs Vargas is my single favourite modern day fight. There have been better fights but this one just meant more. Vargas had given Oscar **** his whole professional career and paid a heavy price. De La Hoya took the best Fernando had and came back blazing. Oscar took over mid way through the 6th (although Vargas had an effective ninth) and began landing the right hand over and over. The left hook knockdown in the 11th is the best lead hook I've ever seen. It's blink and you miss it, short, compact and was delivered with amazing power. Great fight!
mayorga had talked about de la hoyas manhood and said some bad things about what he would do to his wife. It was beyond the line of whats called upon for a hype and press conference. oscar beat his ass so bad.. I think that was one of the fights that made me jup out the seat and go ballistic. mother****in justice! the late great vernon forrest had problems with the brawler as did mosley before he stopped him pretty late.
Just finished watching this fight also, really great fight. That left hook was murderous. Funny thing is for the first Vargas fight with Mosley, I think that the first half was identical in the 3-3 scoring.
Spanish is his first language. I always hated how many Mexicans said he wasnt Mexican enough. Spanish was his first language, lived and grew up in a neighborhood that was all Mexican in a city called "Los Angeles" nonetheless, spent his summers south of the border... but hey, Vargas was though.
The rivalary was entirely Varga's making, he talked a bunch of Macho bull**** about how Oscar wasn't a real Mexican blah blah and than he got his ass kicked.
