The grudge started post Tito-DLH. Vargas started calling DLH names and saying he wasn't a real mexican because he ran like a ***** in the last three rounds and threw that fight away. Then Vargas didn't run against Tito and Tito destroyed his career

This is one of my all time favorite fights.

You have my all time favorite fighter and my 2nd all time favorite fighter in an incredible fight.

No one knows excatly for sure why they hated each other. Let me rephrase, why Vargas hated/hates ODLH. I'm also sure Oscar doesn't hate Vargas, as a matter of fact, ODLH took Vargas out for lunch to make peace, and I think to sign him up to GBP when GBP was still an up and coming company.

To best put as to why Vargas despised ODLH, I'll use an example from the Pixar movie "The Incredibles". Remember when the young inventor kid wanted to hang out with his idol, "Mr. Incredible", but Mr. Incredible was to busy doing his own thing to have this young kid pester him around??....

...well, I think that's how it went down with Vargas and DLH. If anyone saw the movie, the kid was butt hurt andwent on to despise Mr. Incredible and eventually became his biggest nemesis.

Vargas went to train at DLH's gym in Big Bear, and I think he wanted more attention from Oscar than what he received and it pissed him of to hell since he had acknowledge that Oscar was his idol, and with all the Oscar comparison, perhaps he thought him and Oscar would hit it off....Obviously they didn't.

In their fight Oscar used his fantastic jab (which imo is what contributed to Vargas rapidly deteriorating spine problems) to keep Vargas at bay, and throw him off his game plan, but Vagas was too skilled to strong to be beaten by just the jab, as he used accurate punching to find holes in Oscar's defense to land his punches.

It was back and forth, but by round 7 it was evident Oscar was controlling the fight, winning rds 6, 7, and 8. Making the score 5 rds to 3 in favor of the Golden Boy. But in round 9 vargas came back with a tremendous Rally that had Oscar in defensive mode the entire round and getting caught woth straight raight continuosly.

Rd 10 was again very tactiful, and very close, possibly Vargas having the edge, but Oscar stold the round with the 5 punch combinattion that worked its way up from Vargas' liver and finished off Varagas' chin that wobbled him and completey changed the attitudes in both fighters.

From the point on it looked like Vargas' confidence had diminished greatly, while Oscar was extremely focused in setting Vargas up and go for the kill using patience and accurate punching.

Everyone knows what happened after that, it was a great ending to a great fight, Oscar showing he still had the fire within him that many doubted he had, and Vargas showing that he held true to his quote, "I'd rather swallow my blood before I swallow my pride". vargas went out on his shield, like a true warrior in one of the most powerful, tactiful,a nd dramatic fight of this decade.

Oscar's combination at the end of the round where he starts at the body and finishes with the left hook is amazing, also his left hook that drops Vargas is absolutely perfect.

I agree...It was a four punch combo that started with three body shots and ended with a left hook to the jaw that wobbled Vargas. If it wasn't the end of the round (10 i think) the fight would have been over right there.

That sizzling left hook that dropped Vargas in the 11th was short and sweet as hell.

    Great fight!!!

Back in the day I was a big DLH fan, loved his style. And during the media stuff I was praying for DLH to do a job on him but I was worried. I thought what Vargas had to bring couldn't be handled by DLH.

When DLH finished the fight with those unanswered punches I did something that I never to I leaped up from the sofa and punched the air exclaiming "yeah mother****er, that's how we do it!"

    And I'm Scottish!

(gotta admit too that DLH v Vargas and Tito v Vargas would be close to my all time top ten fights. First time I watched Tito v Vargas I was like what the **** have I just watched? Crazy **** but I had a massive smile on my face. fantastic.)

i wonder if the fight would have been as good if it wasn't for the steroids. vargas' used his superior physical strength to bully ODLH early in that fight. if he wasn't on roids oscar may have taken over earlier.

All I remember from this fight is that DLH had his cup way too high and it nullified Vargas' punches to the body.

This is the fight that actually led me to find this boxing forum as I was searching the internet for news related to this upcoming fight more than 20 years ago.

I have to say this may probably be my favorite fight of all time featuring my favorite and second favorite boxers of all time.

It definitely was bitter sweet, but what made it easy was that my family were all rooting for Vargas so it made me root for Oscar even more.

According to Vargas he was training in the mountains in Big Bear California where Oscar used to train, as he was jogging he slipped on some ice and Oscar happened to jog past him and chuckled at the small incident. I think it hit Vargas hard considering he's a proud person, and harder that it came from Oscar who he looked up too.

A lot of people were comparing the young Vargas to De La Hoya, and despite having his own unique accolades like becoming the youngest amateur champion and youngest Jr.MW champion, and beating Ike Quartey mlre convincingly than DLH, he seemed to be falling short of being on par with his former hero and now nemesis.

I think that fueled to the resentment that started when he was disappointed DLH poked fun a him as a young teen.

As talks for the fight were underway there was some kind of encounter at a fast food establishment if I remember correctly where Vargas confronted De La Hoya and shoved him.. and that's when Oscar decided to make the fight to teach him a lesson.

The rest is history. It was a great fight but Oscar was just a tad bit better in every department minus strength. Vargas came in shredded unlike any of his other fights and post fight PED testing showed Vargas had taken steroids.

Back then fighters would throw more than 1, 2, 3 punches at a time.. they threw jabs to land combinations, used great footwork, bouncing on their toes. Boxing has definitely changed.

All I remember was that had Vargas not gotten caught with that hook in the last few seconds of round 10, he probably would’ve went into the last two rounds with a very strong chance to win.
