Just saw in entirety in good quality. Great fight. Oscar brawled, and fought Chavez's fight. Chavez had good moments, Obviously Oscar hurt Chavez enough to make him quit. Thoughts on Chavez quitting? Oscar said after the fight Chavez said to him "You beat me". Chavez was bleeding a lot from the mouth, was he criticized for quitting? This was at the later stage of his career, I was just a little surprised because he wasn't cut bad and didnt look like he had a broken nose. I guess age, wear and tear, and Oscar all were factors. Thoughts?
Oscar was brave enough to demand a rematch with Chavez who he beat the first time, but couldn't muster up the courage to give Quartey, Whitaker or Felix Sturm a rematch.
On the other hand Oscar fought all those guys plus Trinidad. How many fights did those guys have against each other?
Mosley as well :hat It was a fun fight but really nothing more than a payday for Chavez and Oscar, because he was talking a lot of smack to Oscar about their first fight and how Oscar "got lucky" with the cut. So Oscar said ok I'll give you a title shot. No one else was available anyhow at the moment.
Chavez backtracked and didn't admit to quitting in the post fight interview in his dressing room. He was past it but I wanted a conclusive ending. Oscar's eye was beginning to close after trading blows and I felt if the fight went on it would've gotten interesting.
What up sangria? Yes I noticed that too Oscar's eye was closing And had a knot under it He got tagged quite a bit. Do you think if it went on Oscar would have resorted back to boxing, rather than brawling? Either way Oscar had balls brawling with a brawler.
Chavez actually stood off De La Hoya and had success with the jab and countering him. I can mind he caught De La Hoya a couple of times at the end of the early rounds with good pounches. After the fight, De La Hoya admitted that Chavez had somewhat tricked him as he expected the usual, aggressive, Chavez. It did erupt into a brawl during periods of the fight, yes. De La Hoya was tentative and unsure when Chavez backed off, boxed and countered.
He quit in the Frankie Randall rematch and got rewarded with a technical win. As for the Oscar rematch, he just got tired of being hit. Much like when Chavez rematched Uncle Roger, Roger just had enough of a beating and that was it.
Hey buddy! I haven't watched it for a while but I'm guessing Oscar might have poured it on. I remember he held back against Miguel Angel Gonzalez after getting a puffy eye and got booed for lack of action. If I recall the date was already set for a DeLaHoya-Quartey match in the Fall of '98 that got pushed back to February '99 because of this battle.
