What a great war this fight was. People like to believe Chavez was shot, but I'm sorry, Shot fighters don't fight like Chavez did in this fight and critics said it was his best performance in years. He gave a very spirited effort and went to war with Oscar for 8 rounds. Oscar was prime here too. Watch the 29.07 mark, the last round. What a war! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JV1piZgNRk8
I haven't watched it in a while, the way I remember it was JCC stayed on Oscar but just wasn't landing enough to really slow him down whilst Oscar was mving a lot and landing lots of jabs. There' a long way between 'prime' and 'completely shot', If JCC was completely shot then he wouldn't have been at all competitive with Oscar but it doesn't mean Oscar would have beaten him in his prime. I think it would have been a GREAT fight in their respective primes. JCC's body punching, will\relentlessness, chin and stamina might have seen him stop Oscar late and possibly be behind on the cards. I'd say it would have been either a DLH decision or a JCC stoppage. I think the fight would be all about Oscar's stamina, if JCC kept coming forward Oscar would have had to move constantly and throw a lot of jabs. Correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't JCC known for being able to cut off the ring well? It has all the makings of a classic fight. The rugged workhorse trying to corner and knock out the speedy pretty boy whilst the pretty boy gambles on if his power is enough to stop or even slow down the iron chinned worked horse.
Chavez got destroyed in both fights. For such a tough Mexican fighter it was pretty funny and ironic that the Goldenboy made the great JCC quit. I remember watching it live and being very ecstatic with the way it ended. I don't like Julio at all, I thought he had gift decisions back in the 90's and it was unfair to fighters that clearly beated him (i.e. Sweet pea.) Seemed like the judges in his fights did anything and everything possible to save the guys undefeated record for as long as possible. I'm glad Oscar didn't allow it to go to the judges scorecards and wiped the floor with Chavez.
Prime for prime, yea if Oscar tried to go to war with him as he did in this second fight then sure, I can chavez gutting out a decision. But oscar is a much superior boxer, if he got on his toes Chavez wouldn't have much of a chance. Oscar was too big, too fast and chin is too durable for Chavez to get the better of in a boxing match.
That JCC was long removed from being a in his prime fighter. He had nothing left by the end of the 8th. I've always wondered why the didn't have an immediate rematch after the first fight. I know ODLH stopped him on cuts, but it wasn't as if JCC was reeling around the ring on the brink of a stoppage. It was just a bad cut.
i remember the first fight the vato in Oscar came out he got tired of the pretty boy talk and the safety first talk and he came out and really showed the world what he was about on the inside I never remembered him throwing his dogs with such speed every punch had a reason and that scowl on his face was up there with the meanest looks for one night that smile went away and a mad man was put in its place
A very good fight and more competitive than I think most people remember. Chavez wasn't shot, but he was a long way past his formidable best. That combo at the end of the round just took all the starch out of him.
I agree, and I honestly believe that Oscar was being lured into something deadly with him going to war with Chavez in 2nd fight. I think 1-2 more rounds we may have seen Oscar get hurt. He was sticking his nose in there and Chavez was very game and keeping right in there with oscar. That last 10 seconds was the breaking point for chazez in the 8th, when oscar landed that viscous uppercut rocking him. I thinK oscar was getting frustrated though and amazed he couldn't put chavez away. The 9th round would have been very interesting had chavez not quit.
DLH was simply to big, strong, and fast for a way over the hill Chavez that was never a welterweight. DLH climbed the ring as a middleweight that night and outweiged Chavez by a good 15 lbs. This fight took place over 2 years from their first fight and confirmed to me that if it had not been for that pre-existing cut, Chavez would have beaten DLH 2 years earlier when he was really alot closer to his prime and in much better shape than he was for fight 2.
