De La Hoya vs Ike Quartey 1999

I've always been uncomfortable on how long the ref let that beating go on. It was unneccesary. Sure willpower kept Ike up but the Vargas TKO was called quicker than Ike's beating and Ike was getting hit with cleaner shots than Vargas.

 

Vargas was covering up and getting hit, and that left hand from DLH made Vargas's head go up and he wasn't really defending himself. He was trying to, but failing miserably.

Quartey was firing back and DLH was missing most of his shots.

If DLH was more controlled and accurate against Ike like he was against Vargas, I'm sure Halpern would've stopped it. Or Ike would be laid out again and taken a ten count.

 

Very true regarding the final round, but there were 11 rounds prior to that, and no matter how you look at it you couldnt score the last round 10-7 it was a beating in that round sure, but Ike did score enough rounds in the bag to secure a win IMO, but he didnt get the win simply because DLH was a hot ticket back then.

 

I totally see your point but it was a close fight. Regardless of what people think there has to be a little subjectiveness going on in the scoring because if it is too clinical, that is, if it is only the scorecards and the public is watching something else happening in front of their eyes then that is controversy too. If it had been a different style final round where a boxer scored a knockdown that's ok. But as it is the championship round and it is a blowout for a boxer only about a point behind then that screams for a different interpretation. It is controversial situation by nature. By the way, I remember the 11th being tight but going to Oscar. Either way, you guys and all the commentators that night are right in having wanted the rematch. Quartey definately deserved that.

Thank you, its good to get noticed as I am the Mike Mcallum of this Forum. Toiling in obscurity but bringing it daily, and no nut gobbling form me, I tell it like it is regardless if I like a fighter or not. I love boxing and see through the bull**** and I will continue to bring it.:twisted:

 

the fight was too close it could have gone either way, however the forrest-quartey fight was the biggest robbery in the last 5 years

 

I thought Ike controlled the pace of the fight, out jabbed DLH and won by a slim margin, only 1 point. The fight was close so i wouldnt grumble with the outcome.
