Just watched this fight again. For me this was a clear Ike win and he was robbed! (I had it 115-112). The final judge who had it 116-112 had eight rounds for Oscar! I would like to clarify who won the fight?
Not watched this since 2012, but I had Oscar winning by two if I recall. Wouldn't have grumbled with a draw, but don't think I could quite make a case for Quartey winning it outright, good effort and close fight though it was. What I do remember from re-watching it back then was that it wasn't quite as thrilling or exciting a fight as I had initially remembered it. Great sixth and twelfth rounds, but pretty so-so for the rest of it in the grand scheme of things. Although it wasn't as close or disputed a decision, I actually think Whitaker-Trinidad from a week or two before was possibly a better fight to watch on the whole. Will see if I can find my old card for this one when I get a chance.
I had Oscar, though just barely. Still a win of any kind against a prime Ike Quartey is nothing to sneeze at. I've always believed Oscar gets short shrift here by a lot of people. In an era where so many so-called greats pick and choose the easiest route to the money, Oscar fought just about every top dog he could have been expected to and fought on more than even terms with everyone in his prime or near it. We should be applauding a fighter like that but some don't want to see things that way.
What was your scorecard and which rounds did you think absolutely, unquestionably belonged to Quartey?
Oscar DeLaHoya vs Ike Quartey Round 1: 10-9 Oscar Round 2: 10-10 Even Round 3: 10-10 Even Round 4: 10-9 Oscar Round 5: 10-9 Ike Round 6: 10-9 Ike (both fighters score knockdowns but Ike has the best of the exchanges) Round 7: 10-9 Ike Round 8: 10-9 Ike Round 9: 10-9 Ike Round 10: 10-9 Oscar Round 11: 10-10 Even Round 12: 10-8 Oscar (Oscar scores a knockdown) Total: 115-115 Draw Oscar barely scrapes home with a draw in this one on my card.
Round 1: 10-9 Oscar Round 2: 10-9 Ike Round 3: 10-9 Oscar Round 4: 10-9 Ike (debatable) Round 5: 10-9 Ike Round 6: 10-9 Ike Round 7: 10-9 Ike Round 8: 10-9 Ike Round 9: 10-9 Ike Round 10: 10-9 Oscar Round 11: 10-9 Ike Round 12: 10-8 Oscar 115-112 I thought Ike clearly won 5-9 and won at least 1 of the first 4 and 1 of the last 3 so for me the worse score for Ike would be 114-113
Thanks. I haven’t watched it in a few years but I remember thinking that it could have gone to either fighter because there were 2 or 3 toss-up rounds. Pretty sure I scored it for Oscar by a point when I watched it in real time back in the 90s. Definitely didn’t seem like a robbery to me. I’ll have to add it to my rewatch list.
Had Quartey winning, but boy what a 12th round. DLH wanted the ref to stop it so bad. But he didn't!!
