There are plenty of good looking boxers out there and I don't see them getting the droves of fans and cross-over appeal that DLH has....its more his personality that and smile endears him people.

But yeah if he was joe blow duche bag that never smiled and had bad things to say and acted like he could do anything he'd be much less marketable and probably won't make as much money as he's made and wouldn't have the same insentive for sticking around to take beatings. But as far as the big fights he's had winning the gold medal pretty much opened those fights up for him. Cause he was always going to be a marketable guy with that type of early success.

    Nah.
He was very selective regarding his opponents and he avoided rematches.
And most of all he didn't dominate a singe weight division even for some time.
So yes it is partly his looks that made him popular and it is his popuarity that gave him those opportunities.

There couldn't be ugly Golden boy

    ducked Margarito
he said he would fight the winner of Cotto-Margo fight
    still awaiting

other than that, nuff respect to DLH, he is a legend

if he was Ugly , he would have no money from modelling
less money from fights as less women and batty men will attend his fights
Maybe some judges envy'd how he looked so they robbed him in the mosley rematch, and the Tito fight.

BTW, boxing is based of skill and not looks, the guy had pure skills, speed, a brilliant left hook, and business mind.

De La Hoya made a name for himself by being so talented and fighting everyone. He had an explosive style in his younger years at 135, 140, and 147. People loved him because along with his great combination punches, relentlessnes came KOs that people love. He wanted to fight everyone and did.

If you feel his looks did play a part with the fans, who btw are mostly men, macho men for that, then let's just say it had very little influence if any.

You make the $$$$ by the level of competion you face. Oscar faced all the great fighters he could have faced in his younger fighing days. Regardless if they were good or bad timing, he faced them for us fans to see. That my friend is why he's making so much $$$$. Just look at Pac, he's making a lot of $$$$$$$$$ himself because he keeps fighting the top guys.

His looks helped win over casual women fans. Think about it most women know who he is even if they dont follow boxing.
