Oscar De La Hoya will fight a tune-up match on May 3 before his expected rematch with Floyd Mayweather Jr. The match, against an opponent to be named later, will take place at either Mexico City's Estadio Azteca or the Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif.

The fight, which will be part of a career countdown, will likely air on Home Box Office instead of pay-per-view, to help drum up interest in the proposed September 13 rematch with Mayweather.

"I want to set a trend where the big-name fighters will fight on free television," De La Hoya said. "Why not go back to the roots? Go back to fighting on free television. I think the fans deserve it. I hope other fighters can do this."

According to Richard Schaefer, the CEO of Golden Boy Promotions, De La Hoya has discussed developing a show about going back to his roots, and on Friday morning told Schaefer he wanted his next fight to feature such a theme.

If thats the case, and he wants to set the precedent, then why not try and get it on NBC or ABC? More exposure for boxing than it can get on HBO.

I know what the fans don't deserve. That's seeing you're sorry, greedy ass fighting top fighters and losing to them and taking chances away from other great fighters just because of your name. I can't stand this guy.

With the strike going on, seems to me that the networks would love to negotiate anything that brings ratings. Seems like it would benefit both.

Man, i pray that this happens. It would kill their profits for the PBF fight. I would be rolling on the floor. :nut :good

True, but what else does network TV have going on besides reality TV shows right now? The writers strike is ruining their ratings.

Well, the difference with DLH is that he's already got more money than any other boxer out there. Most other fighters are just trying to get that one big pay day. For him, any big if any other fighter's biggest pay day. Hopkins didn't really get paid until he fought DLH. Same with PBF.

I can't stand his greedy ass. He's hurting the sport.

If he had just retired after the last fight then ok. But what he doesnt realise is that the fans are going to be sick of him and it will affect his promotion business.
