De la Hoya- would he be considered an ATG if he had retired after Mayorga?

DLH has lost WAY too many big fights to be an ATG. HOFer? Yes. ATG? Nope.

Marketing does not equal ATG status.

Excuses. Plenty of fighters have several losses. Especially when they are about 36 years old and still fighting the #1 pd 4 pd fighters in the world. Or when they move up 6 division to fight a long standing dominant Champ, ect... The point is that Oscar was ALWAYS competitive. No matter how many weight classes up, or how great the opponent, how old he was, ect... Up until his last fight against Pac of course. Oscar has been a part time boxer ever since his heartbreaking robbery against Tito. He hasn't been the same fighter. However, it doesn't matter... because he was already an ATG before that fight.

ATG as a term is so stretched out it's practically vague. What constitutes an ATG? DO you have to be ranked in someone's top 100? Be in the Hall or a lock after retirement? Best 10 in your weight class?

For what it's worth, DLH is a HOF. But an ATG? All I know is he'd be a underdog and probably lose facing most 'peers' on a who's who list of great fighters through out the weight classes in his physical prime (147 - 154).

oscar got the biggest fights in boxing becaue he was the biggest draw. there's always a case to say he beat tito, but after the first half of the fight it's also fair to say oscar lost that fight.

the bottom line is that oscar pursued the biggest fights in boxing because that's where he made the most money once he clicked into his situation and he lost all of them.

some were disputable, sure - tito, mosley 2 - especially.

but then again he was fortunate in a couple of high profile fights too.

oscar was terrific to watch when he was young and throwing combos but he was always easy to hit against good opposition.

it's luck - and luck alone - that he had a granite chin, but oscar was a poor 'thinker' in the ring and he couldn't adapt well to his opponent.

look at oscar's fights and you'll see that he was an exciting, come forward fighter who was technically proficient in offense but his defense sucked big time.

he was never an ATG and won't be remembered as one.

    he never earnt it.

Totally untrue. Oscar used to be very well known for his great defense. How many clean shots did you see Tito land on him?

Anyways, like I said. I stand by the fact that Oscar was an ATG before he ever even stepped into the ring against Tito. I am sure that history will DEFINITELY look at Oscar as an ATG. Watch a few years after he is retired... people down the road look at his resume, and say WOW.

You guys crack me up acting like Oscar only fought the big fights because that is where he made the most money. First of all... he put himself in that position to make that kind of money, and EVERY fighter makes the big bucks in the big fights... yet not everyone is willing to fight EVERYBODY like Oscar did. Also, saying that Oscar lost all of his big fights is absolutely absurd.

My opinion on who Oscar won and lost against? I would hope that he already knows. I don't even need to talk about his robbery against Tito or Mosley... I already mentioned big fights that he won, and how he was already an ATG before he even fought Tito. Why do I need to do it again? I would figure that he could read the other post, without asking me to type it again.. right?

you said...saying that oscar losing the biggest fights in his career is absurd.

so either stop stuttering or put your money where your (cheap so far) mouth is. because if you can't and you stutter again - then all you've said is you're an oscar fan out of habit but you're ignorant about his career.

your turn..and don't ***** out of it this time.

you dismissed it, so let's see what you bring to the table...

Is Duran an ATG in your opinion?:think I would love for someone to explain how Oscar, who has more wins over top fighters than Duran is NOT an ATG... yet Duran, who has a WAY worse win-loss ratio against the best fighters that he fought is one of the highest rated ATG's of all time.
