Vargas ahead on the poll as expected. De La Hoya's best win was against Quartey, although it was somewhat controversial. He cherry picked the Vargas fight after he saw that Fernando's punch resistance had dropped off the table. Safe move. The fans who followed the sport closely at the time know what I'm talking about. Fernando fought mindlessly and crudely to go on top of it, simply trying to overpower De La Hoya. Almost zero technique. He served himself up on a silver platter. Great win by De La Hoya though, particularly the fashion statement.

Don't agree. Fernando fought mindlessly against Tito, fought more tactically against Oscar. Anyway, thread says best fight not best win, in other words everyone is chiming in as to his best win when the thread is about best scrap, most exciting fight, whether he wins or loses, or what you think of the comp.

Cool. Don't agree, because we are different planets, my friend. Different galaxies more like it. A laymen could see the difference.

I really don't think Vargas fought that mindlessly against either Trinidad or De La Hoya. At least not to the point where it would've made a difference between winning and losing (punishment sustained is another story). Everyone remembers Vargas brawling it out too much against Trinidad, which he did at times, but the fight was turned around when he was boxing. After the disasterous first round when Trinidad countered Vargas's jab with a left hook and hurt him, Vargas did well and dropped Tito in the 4th and dominated the 5th with movement and angles. He was actually backing up and still boxing when Trinidad turned things around in the 6th, with a right hand. Afterwards, Vargas was still boxing, and Tito would catch him. Then in the 9th is when Vargas brawled too much and although he landed his share of good shots, got hit too often.

Against De La Hoya, I don't think Vargas fought stupid or reckless, he just got beaten by the better fighter. Vargas was never a defensive whiz, his D was alright, and DLH just caught him with too many shots throughout and eventually with a couple of great left hooks.

Indeed. Agree there, good post. As far as the De La Hoya fight we differ. I'd encourage anyone curious to go back and watch for what we're describing here. Vargas was mindless with capital M, roided, raging, full of hate, and under the impression he could just run right over De La Hoya and hurt him with everything he threw, and it was blatant. Overwhelmingly.

De La Hoya was just dope against Quartey...he had to overcome adversity for what I believe was the first time, scored that knockdown...that fight made me a fan of Oscar.

Agreed. Clearly his best fight, IMHO. I've gone back on that one many times. It's a good one.

OK, you just keep believing this. The rest of us will believe Vargas fought a very competitive fight, lead on the scorecards up until the last few rounds, and gave DLH all he could handle. :good

That's how good Vargas was. I KNOW, bud. What's the point you're trying to make here? You changing subjects? I don't follow.

**** is just too cut and dry generic with some people...

Vargas fight was exciting. Oscar landed over 100 more punches than Tito, but Tito had Don King's judges.

I don't know if it's been said, because I'm not reading all that ****, but FELIX STRUM comes to mind.

Also, of course, the Vargas fight.

This poll sums up Oscar's career perfectly.

Bottler at the top level. Lost to every elite fighter he ever faced etc.

If it aint from the Wig, it don't mean ****!

Vargas "El ***-get" is still having nightmares over the humiliation he suffered. Then he tests positive for steroids after the fight. So even a roid-ed out vargas gets his dick turned into a ***** by DLH. And after talking all sorts of **** before the fight. That's major ownage right there.
