Dean of Puerto Rican boxing, Mario Rivera Martino picks Pacquiao to defeat Cotto...

"I thought this important Boricua boxing guy would give homeboy Miguel I’m No Angelo Cotto a strong vote of confidence going into the Nov. 14 super bout against Pinoy Idol Manny Pacquiao.

I thought wrong because the veteran journalist who is now public relations director for the Puerto Rico-based WBO, gives the WBO 147 pound champion from Caguas only a slim chance of an upset victory over the speedy Filipino.

He knows and likes Cotto but he believes that Pacquiao will win if the bout gets past the early rounds.

“I think Miguel can win early but, if he doesn’t nail Pacman then, the tide will shift over to Manny. If it goes many rounds, I think Manny will prevail,” Martino said.

Martino, who became a correspondent for The Ring and also wrote about boxing for The San Juan Star, is among those who feel Antonio Margarito took something out of Cotto.

“I don’t think Miguel is the same fighter he was before that bout,” Martino said. “He is a bit diminished. Beating him won’t be easy for Pacquiao, I’m not saying that, but everything points to a Pacquiao victory.”

The Boricua Boxing Dean has spoken."

Not surprised. Cotto doesn't get the love from the Puerto Rican fans that past Rican fighters have enjoyed. I remember Trinidad picking Judah to beat him a while back, Rican fans were split down the middle during the Quintana affair, Cotto didn't get sell out crowds at Madison Square Garden until recently due to lack of Puerto Rican support early in his career, and now this guy.

Don't know what he did to **** his people off, but being the premiere fighter from that island you'd think he'd have more backing than he does.

I think its because since Cotto is more "shy" and not as charismatic as Tito he doesnt have that same support. Also Cotto fights more for himself whereas Tito fought more for his country so to say.

I've heard that distinction between them before, and I can't say I understand it.

When did Miguel come out and say, "I do this all for my own glory, the island can go to hell?"

I dont underestand it as well. But thats the definition we have heard for why Cotto doesnt get as much love as Tito. I think its BS also.

He never said the Island can go to hell. However in the past, he has stated he fights for himself. Tito was Viva Puerto Rico and represented the country, while Cotto also represents the country but is more the quiet type. He stays more to himself.

I hope some of this gets put to bed before and during the Pacquiao fight. He deserves full support from his people for taking on this challenge, whether he's a "people person" or not.

With all the tragic deaths we've had this year, I don't think anything of that nature is cool to say. I know you probably didn't mean it but that's just not appropiate IMO.

Cotto has always been an underdog in PR.
