Absolutly ****in 100% CORRECT:good I can't stand this only "Sing when yer winning" nonsence, of course it's not nice too say the least if some boxer came onto a forum & read some of the uber negative comments about himself but what should it be, all back slapping & praise:nono Footballers/Refs get it in the neck every week from 50K+ experts, but it goes with the game, if any proffesional boxer is affected by some of the criticision he reads on here then he'd better rap the game in, the only person he should take note of is himself & every time he looks in the mirror to shave he should ask himself the question why am i a fighter. It's not the back slappers or the slaggers that go into the ring it's him & his focus should be just all about what he believes & **** anyone & everyone else's opinion. If he's in need of love/praise he should go get a hooker & these forums are not too be hi-jacked or censored by the boxing establishment, simple too sort out, fine any boxer that goes onto a forum & boohoos, self belief = success, as we can't help-em:smoke
Having read some of the comments I wanted to add some of my own experiences with Dean Powell. When I passed my driving test at 17 I was boxing competitively and the first thing I wanted to do was get over to one of the pro gyms in Manchester. I started going to Steve Foster’s gym in Salford. I had been going for a couple of weeks but on this particular day I was stopped at the door and told the boxing gym was out of use as it had been booked for a private session. I had a spy through the window and couldn’t believe it when I saw Junior Jones from America shadow boxing in the ring. There was no way I was moving from that window, after a couple of minutes Dean Powell walked past and asked if I was ok, I told him I was there to train but couldn’t get into the boxing gym. Without a second thought he brought me past the security into the room and introduced me to Steve Foster, (who was also first class). Steve even told me to get my gloves on and start training. Dean stayed with me for a while and gave me a few pointers. Little things like that mean a lot when you’re younger and stay with you so in my eyes Dean Powell can’t do any wrong. Since then I’ve not had too many dealings with Dean but he was very supportive when I was getting Gomez ready for the Burns fight, he phoned at least once a week to make sure everything was ok. As far as the job he does I wouldn’t envy the task. What a lot of people don’t see is sometimes it’s not the matchmaker’s fault a fight doesn’t happen. The matchmaker also has the trainer saying to them’ nope not taking that fight I want something easier.’ I watched Dean once when I was in Amir Khan’s gym and his phone literally didn’t stop ringing. Not wanting to sound like Iam brown nosing, just adding my opinion, I think his comments re the internet forums were more the personal attacks. At the end of the day he is just a bloke doing his job. He’s not a celebrity who has chosen to be in the spotlight. Im sure none of us would take someone criticising our profession without saying something. I think if you watch a fighter and he doesn’t perform or people want to add what they think the fighter should do etc that’s great, but personal attacks on someone who most of us don’t know what goes into doing his job is uncalled for.
No one is hating on Dean Powell for any other reason than he attacked what we love and needs to take a look at his match making. The large majority of attacks are directed at these two points. I'm sure he is a lovely bloke etc but that isn't what I'm talking about.
But you called him a wanker? Dean obviously doesn't understand the concept of these forums that well. If your a person who isn't familiar with the internet and log on seeing stuff like what is written on this thread about you- you'd be pissed off and want to know why. Achilles I know your a good chap and meant nothing by it but posters need to realise that you are talking about real people, who have access to what you write and so do their families. By choosing to use this forum to express and engage in conversation I sign a silent waiver that you are allowed to take the **** out of me, my loss to Baz Carey, my mediocre record etc etc but Dean doesn't post on here.... No need. My pennies worth.... and i've always tried to be constructive with my critism u'll never see me call any fighter or trainer a wanker. Bit of respect never goes amiss.
I do think he is a wanker for attacking a medium I love. Hell, I sometimes spend more time of the day on here then with my missus or family. If he doesn't understand something then don't comment on it especially so decisively. I'm not attacking the man. I'm calling him a wanker for attacking the medium I love and his poor match making. In effect a wanker means nothing. I'm not literally calling him a wanker, though he probably is. It is simply me venting. I have respect for everyone but then that person doesn't deserve your respect when they attack you. I am part of the collective he commented on thus the respect went out the window. You didn't see me, before this thread, hating on Dean Powell for no reason!
Powell should spend less time on the sunbed and more time on boards like this so he can understand how disappointed hardcore boxing fans are at the constant mismatches rolled out by him and his ilk.
That's the pertinent point, he probably just doesn't understand it I think we've come out a bit hard on this one, it was probably quite an off the cuff remark on a subject he's not too clued up on, but has heard bad things about
I guess if you don't understand the (for right or for wrong) realities of forums it must seem shocking to see posts like "XXXXX is a ****ing useless" or "XXXX is a disgrace to boxing". I know these arn't the norm on most forums but they do crop up from time to time and, whereas we might just skim over the rant, it must seem pretty OTT to someone not used to it.
i agree those who have met dean will take a different view of him, he is has professional has he can be and has a tough job which at times he gets lots of unwarranted/warranted stick for, but to attack people personally by name calling is on these forums shows how shallow these people are, i would go has far to say they are cowards they hide behind key boards, dean is a very devoted and hard working man which he gets little praise for
