Dear Abby, Lately I have been spending a lot of time with DEB, the hottest double end bag in the gyn, but am confused and frustrated about the progress of our relationship. Despite all of our time together I cannot figure DEB out. I'm always trying to hit but more often than not, I get denied. By the time I get to the target, nobody is home. Then, suddenly, BAM! DEB comes out of nowhere and hits me! DEB is so unpredictable and it is so frustrating! When I am zigging, DEB is zagging. When I approach, DEB retreats. When I go left, DEB goes right. I'm willing to put in my time with DEB to work things out. Do you have any suggestions that might help DEB and I get into the same rhythm? Sincerely, Confounded in Cincinnati
Jabs, jabs, double ****ing jabs, jabs while circling, slips. Do that until you're comfortable KEEPING THE BAG ON THE END OF YOUR REACH. Add the right hand. 1-2. 1-1-2. 1-2-1-2-1. Keep working the slips. Make sure you keep using footwork. When the bag goes back, you go forward slightly, when it comes back at you you retreat slightly, or you slip it. Keep circling and pivoting around it. Remember, the goal is to keep it at the end of your reach. When you can do all that pretty easily (and it will take time), throw in the hook. 1-2-3-pivot-1-1-2-3, 2-3-2-3-2-3-2-3-2-3. This is where it gets fun, because when you hook the bag it's moving a different direction. You can hit it again to change the direction back to back and forth, or you can pivot so that you're positioned in its path. Then add uppercuts, usually off the slips, but not always. 1-slip right-4-3, 1-2-slip left-left uppercut-overhand right, step in with a jab, jump back with an uppercut, etc. The bag is all about range, footwork, positioning, and timing. You should never be standing still.
Thx for the advice. I just set one up in my basement to practice on because I'm tired of looking like a futz in the gym. Only problem is the one at home is tight as a drum and the one at the gym has a lot of sway, and is a little easier to hit. At the gym I can get into a stead 1+1+2+3 or 1+2+slip+Left upper most of the time. My set up at home I'm lucky to get half a dozen shots in without missing. I hate swinging and missing and the bag just wobbles there, inches from your fist! GRRR!! Anyone else have that problem?
Hey, that's life, sometimes you miss I personally like it, because it gets me used to throwing my combos without waiting to see if the previous punch landed or not. That's a big beginner mistake: Throwing punches one at a time...I'm gonna throw this jab and then a right hand if it's open...You end up being a 1 or 2 punch fighter, and you get your ass whupped.
Just an update.. Today I beat DEB's ass all over the place, and she only landed on me a couple shots. What really helped, was I started two timing DEB from the gym with another sexy bag in my basement who is much younger, in better condition and more difficult to hit. Now when I got to the gym I beat tired DEB's ass with 1+1+1+1+1+2+3+1+2's I am working on 1+2+slip+lead uppercut
