I was literally weighing up Pete versus Tommy. I feel like Pete's was more automatic - he just threw it so well and with good variety, but when Tommy got his jab going, wow - not sure there's a better p4p jab for power, speed and placement.
Now you’re naming a knockout puncher - forget that silliness about Buster Douglas. I felt Ottke’s killer blow on Mundine all the way over here in Australia.
Louis' was piston-like and is up there with the Holmes, Ali, Liston jabs in terms of ATG in the division. However, I don't think he got anywhere the snap and whip that Tommy sometimes got on his jab - of course, size and p4p considerations bridge the gap extremely closer. I would venture that Louis is the closest to textbook perfection at HW that we will ever see. For a man who was so mechanically efficient in his punching, it is a bit of a surprise that he doesn't get more credit for his jab these days.
Holmes & Liston get all the credit but I would say Louis’ was better. It was a bit shorter than those two men is about all you could knock him on.
As far as the exact question goes - 60's Ali is my first choice. His ridiculous and mobility around the jab means he will be picking you off with it while seldom being hit in return almost all night long. Holmes, not as slick in the feet and without a right hand would get caught and cornered a lot more often. Tommy wouldn't have the durability under this scenario (ONLY jabs). Guys like Foreman and Liston would get outboxed as would Louis. Whitaker would go quite well. Only jabs to win a fight? Ali's definitely my pick. Great speed and mobility is paramount to success in this scenario.
The jab is my favorite punch. I've never seen a jab as good as Holmes in any weight class in boxings history. Holmes would easily be my number 1 pick. Ali Louis Liston Hearns Quartey Loughran all belong at the top of the heap but Holmes is number one in my book regardless of what brand glove he's wearing lol SMH
