Has there been a boxer who has literally killed his opponents in the ring.? A boxer during the 1950's to now? I'm sure there have been numerous deaths during the early days of boxing when regulations weren't strict and gloves were thinner. I recently watched the movie "Cinderella Man", where the Boxing Champ was known to have killed two opponents in the ring, and I know that the movie was nonfiction. :bbb :!:
I don't know if someone has died in the ring but there have been a few who died an hour or so or more after getting out.
I think Emile Griffith might have actually killed someone in the ring? I could just be digging up information I've seen and sticking Griffiths name on it but I'm sure exhaustion and bad referring played a factor. From what I remember it reminded me of Cooney - Norton. Turns out it was footage from Paret Griffith, Paret died ten days later.
Johnny Owen, Cho Hi and Yo-Sam died after winning a 12 round decision, collapsing after winning the WBO intercontinental flyweight title.
http://boxrec.com/list_bouts.php?human_id=5228&cat=boxer Choi down in the last round Yo-Sam was rushed to the hospital immediately after the fight and had brain surgery. Choi died on 1/2/08 after having brain surgery. However, Choi donated his organs and saved 6 people's life. Korean goverment awarded him a medal of honor.
You must be a newbie to the sport. Ring deaths happen almost every year. It wasnt that long ago that Levander Johnson died at the hands of Jesus Chavez. I remember unfortuntely watching poor Bethaven Scottland beaten to death in the ring about 9-10 yrs ago. And I'm guessing you've never heard of Mancini-Kim?
I think the TS wanted to know if any boxers ever died IN THE RING. Most deaths occur in the hopsital well after the fight. I can't think of any where a fighter was pronounced dead IN THE RING, but there must have been a few.
well, im kinda new to the sport. I did not know a couple of the names you guys mentioned. I did know a filipino boxer who collapsed after winning his last fight, and became paralyzed after brain operation. His name was Z Gorres. He was the only one I knew to have suffered since last year.
There have been plenty of deaths due to injuries sustained in boxing matches since the 1950's. Leavander Johnson, Duk Koo Kim, Johnny Owen, and Pedro Alcazar come to mind. And then there are cases like "Kid" Akeem Anifowoshe who died 3 years after his initial brain injury (vs. Robert Quiroga) in an unsactioned fight in Nigeria... and Greg Page, who died 8 years after his career ending brain injury.
God Bless these fighters for the dangers they put themselves through. Another reason to appreciate and respect every single one of the human beings that get in there and have so much to risk and lose everytime they go in there.
sadly this happens all the time. Sugar ray robinson killed a man in the ring. Cant remember he's name
yea theres been alot of deaths in the sport of boxing from the 1950s - 2010. and I'm sure there will be more I'm sure no one wants to kill any buddy in the king but it happens and its up to the Ref the Corner and ring side doctors to stop the fight and keep the fighter safe.
