I was wondering if boxing fatalities have declined since referees tend to stop fights very quickly these days? Anyone know if there were more tragedies on average in the past?
There's been quite a number of death occurrences in Japan recently, especially with two fighters who died on the same card this year. Many attribute those deaths with the a combination of Japanese fighters neglecting defense, weight cuts, and hard sparring.
They had no ambulance and next to medical team on hand. There have been detailed reports of what happened with that event in Japan. Absolutely insane. No pro boxing event should be allowed to occur without a fully equipped paramedic team and an ambulance on site. The moment you get back to your dressing room after a match, you should be given an evaluation to determine whether you should go to a hospital.
Sounds good and all, but two boxers dying on the same night is still an anomaly even without the ambulance on site. And this was shortly after a series of deaths in Japanese boxing. Its a very odd and dark period for them.
