Debate on Talk Sport 4.00.pm today - Will MMA take over from Boxing?

ufc was starting to become big, they then started only putting it on PPV and it's gone back into hiding...

It has its fair amount of followers but really never gets the casuals involved like boxing does

 

Boxing will always be top dog.

 

It peaked back in 2009/10. It was massive then, but now it's declining fast.

 

But that's the beauty of MMA - you don't have 28 fights and then challenge for a belt.

Look at Floyd - who on earth has he fought to enable him to go undefeated in nearly FIFTY FIGHTS?!

 

He is miles from being the highest earner in the UFC!

 

Yeah, but this is women fighting were talking about. Rousey's popularity shows how weak the UFC actually is, especially when Dana White and Joe Rogan start talking rubbish about her beating men in order to hype her.

Something that boxing has never done

But it seem that in general the fights go to sh!t quite often as soon as someone is a little bit hurt and on the floor, and rather than being just boring they actually turn out quite disgusting to watch when someone is getting elbowed in the face 5 times with no guard and is bleeding everywhere (yes I know morons will say that boxing has a higher serious brain injury rate - which is true but not what I am talking about)

I think they need to change the rules to somehow stop that from happening - there doesnt seem to be anyway for a fighter to recover - they have to do it while on the floor getting stamped on

I would say that in terms of participation (ie the average person doing this twice a week for a hobby etc) MMA is far bigger than boxing

 

So? I'm not a fan of her, but Layla Ali was popular in Boxing, right?

 

Boxing will always big bigger but room is there for all sports

 

I live in the usa and it peaked about 5 years a go when it was talked about at work all the time now its seldom mentioned but boxing is talked about a little more now. As for rousey fighting men well i doubt she would beat the average man never mind a trained fighter. The strength difference between a man and woman is huge yes technique can over come to a degree but i think it would be too much for her. Wrestling a man and trying to grapple with him would be too much if he was trying all out

 

ufc is on a slippery slope

 

No kidding. This pseudo sport - whose product is basically centered on a couple of guys rolling around on the ground - is so BORING that it could only be dressed up with WWE-style macho posturing for so long before its young, testosterone fueled fanbase figured out how dull it was, and then latched on to an exciting, action-filled sport like boxing.

UFC is swirling down the toilet as we speak, heading to the cesspool of garbage sports where it always belonged. Boxing will always be part of sport's pantheon. There is no comparison.
