Debate over. Andre Ward is the greatest SMW ever, well clear of Calzaghe.

yep its as I predicted, Joe Cal will inevitably slide down the ranks of the SMWs as the division grows beyond its fledgling roots.

    Today its -

    1. RJJ
    2. Ward (halfway through his career)
    3. Joe Cal/Toney

whereas Calzaghe was number 2 SMW with Toney before this.

Joe only has himself to blame for choosing bumfights to rack up his 20, otherwise he'd rank higher but with some defeats too. His ranking has suffered by trying to artificially stay undefeated.

What makes you think he wouldnt have fought Bute?

If I'm not wrong, he was in the process of unifyng the SMW title in mere months, so its likely he would have faced Bute sooner rather than later, and he only paused along the wasy to destroy the guy that Calzaghe was ran away from. Its not like he was waiting ten years for some MW to come along with the titles like some other Joe's we could mention. Its not even worth trying to defend yourself here - we are talking massive differences in magnitude - months versus decade.

I know you are going to cut and paste some utter shite in reply, credit to havnig the balls to do so when you are being turned over by the magnitude of 10:1.

    Calzaghe.

Better top win, more good wins and won all 4 belts.

Ward should surpass in the next 12-18 months if he stays at 168.

    Froch
    Dawson
    Bika
    Abraham

Froch and Dawson are better than anything on Calzaghe's main list -Reid maybe aside.

You Irish fans needs to get real on this one.

Wards and Calzaghes resume are about the same right now, depending on how you wanna slice and dice the whole "he was drained, he was past prime, he was cheated, it was close and so on"-debate.

Within short Ward will most likely have surpassed Calzaghe, though. It will be exciting to fallow. It was cool to see him fight so aggressivly as he did against Dawson.

You know Ward MUST be the greatest, full time SM ever if this forum has him close to, let alone OVER, Calzaghe in a poll...lol

Yep...that means it's now final and in the books.

Didn't take much to surpass him either...

Yeah this is a pretty fair post, so far I still feel Calzaghe has the best win between the two in a prime undefeated Kessler. Ward has progressed much quicker though, and has accomplished a lot more than Calzaghe had in the same time. Joe needed to do more to force big fights when he was younger, but unfortunately 9 years between Eubank and Lacy was too long! Ward is not even 30, and he has top wins over Kessler and Froch, a good win over Abraham. I don't rate the Dawson win very highly, I think any top 10 SMW would have thrashed that Dawson

One thing I don't understand is people saying Joe ran away from Froch and Dawson? When Calzaghe was on top those guys couldn't sell out a village hall  Boxing is about money, and Calzaghe fought the biggest threats in Kessler and Hopkins, who were the two best fighters at 168 and 175!

Nah, not yet, maybe later on in his career... Calzaghe has this in the bag for now.

    :good

Yeah the speed in which Ward has progressed is impressive, but the Super Six played a major part in that. More impressive(for me) is the way he's doing it.

He seems to be improving every fight and it would have been easy for him to step off the gas on Saturday night and coast it out, but he didnt. Albeit against a drained foe. I think a year ago he would have stepped off. It was good to see.
