6-2 to the 20s! But i see that every match looks to be very, very close so it could it isnt over yet. I dare say, also, that a few posters are liable to make some strengthening substitutions that i havent thought of.
This content is protected This content is protected This content is protected Marciano KO11 Dempsey Tunney UD15 Moore Greb UD15 Robinson - pure speculation, don´t know if I would include this one. Gavilan UD15 Walker - tough, tough one. Could go either way. I settle for Gavilan though. Leonard UD15 Carter don´t know enough about Hermann, Dundee, Carruthers or Perez to jusdge the other fights.
This will be easier if i tally these each day, i think. Heavy 0-2 50s Marciano over Dempsey Light Heavy 2-0 20s Tunney over Moore Middle 2-0 Greb over Robinson Welter 2-0 Walker over Galivan Lightweight 2-0 Leonard over Carter Featherweight 0-1 Saddler over Dundee Bantam 1-0 Herman over Carruthers Fly 1-0 Wilde over Perez Current score: 20's - 6 50's - 2
My teams (20s on left) Dempsey vs Marciano Tunney vs Moore Greb vs Robinson Walker vs Gavilan Leonard vs Carter Dundee vs Saddler Herman vs Carruthers Wilde vs Perez Sorry to be a pain Boilermaker but I'm changing mine again
G Pater, Ezzard Charles never actually fought as a light heavyweight in the 50s, did he? Perez over Wilde is an absolutely huge call, but definitely realistic. Any elaboration on this choice. Also Gavilan over Walker surprises me a little too. What tips the scales in his favour? Also, Manuel Ortiz was getting old by the 50s, wasnt he? He lost his title to Vic Toweel, and generally appeared to lose more than he won, against less than stellar opposition. Not saying that he wouldnt beat Herman (who i know little about), particularly in his prime, bit his record does seem patchy at best in the 50s, doesnt it.
Your right, sub in Moore instead. And that is a Tunney win IMO Both guys relied on speed and quick bursts of punches, I think Perez is more consistent with his workrate and busier. Both guys hit hard but both guys have iron chins. Dont know too much on Walker but he was aggresive and IMO Gavilan will be landing the harder punches in the tradesa and being the ring general. He was still a top fight early 1950 IMO. I thought the Carruthers pick was good as he looks quality but I'll choose Ortiz.
Marciano ko's Dempsey Tunney edges Moore on points Greb edges Robinson (tough, tough call--Greb naturally bigger and did better against bigger men, but Robby not at his best at middle) Gavilan over Walker (Walker was not at his best as a welter) Leonard over Joe Brown Saddler over Dundee Herman over Carruthers Perez over Wilde (Wilde was past his best in the twenties) *The Robinson-Greb matchup is really a toss-up, but I took a stand. **If I am the manager of the fifties, I might throw Fullmer against Greb if I thought Robinson couldn't handle him and fight Robinson as a welterweight. No way I think the fifties lose in both divisions when Robinson is the best welter ever. Still I think what happened in 1926 makes it unlikely Walker beats Gavilan at 147. ***I took Leonard over Brown, but Carlos Ortiz and Duilio Loi would be very formidable substitutes at this weight, and then there is the erratic but dangerous Carter. The fifties have more depth at lightweight I think, but I can't go against Leonard. ****I took Perez over Wilde for two reasons. I question if Wilde was at his best in the twenties, and Perez simply has the better record, never losing until he was 33 and proving himself better than every opponent up to 34. In comparision, Wilde suffered major defeats in his twenties and was finished at 31.
20's Dempsey Tunney Greb Walker Leonard Herman Wilde 50's Saddler 7 -1 to the 20's. So much for the advancement of technique.
Current Score Heavy 2-4 50s Marciano over Dempsey Light Heavy 6-0 20s Tunney over Moore Middle 6-0 Greb over Robinson Welter 3-3 Walker over Galivan Lightweight 6-0 Leonard over Carter Featherweight 0-5 Saddler over Dundee Bantam 4-1 Herman over Carruthers/Ortiz Fly 3-2 Wilde over Perez Current score: 20's - 6 50's - 2 Wow, the 20s look very dominant here. Dempsey even looks like he is going to have a go at Marciano here. Only Sandy Saddler seems comfortable for the 50s. I wonder if Burt Bienstock can change a few minds with Some astute comments about Herman. A few of the predictions gave him a SD, so he was obviously had a few thinking. What a huge performance by Harry Greb over the great Sugar Ray Robinson. I rate this one on the path of an upset, but wouldnt discount a Miraculous sugar ray comeback, as he has a huge fan base on here. Wilde vs Perez is a close battle, and rightly so between two of the greatest flyweights ever. By the way if anyone wants to nominate any decades for Match 3, it will go up soon, and first to reply to this thread will go up.
I like Archie Moore over Gene Tunney. I don't know why people are so quick to pick tunney. Tunney was outboxed by a teenage version of tommy loughran. tunney was fast, but archie was clever and powerful. Archie had a long left jab to help fight off tunney from a distance. most of the men tunney faced did not possess that long left jab. People forget in the early 1950s, archie could really put up a high workrate. He could keep up with tunney's pace. I see him laying traps for tunney and taking advtantage of tunney's low gaurd by marking him with precise accurat pinpoint shots.
All are close fights that can be argued either way... I like Dempsey Moore Greb Gavilan Leonard Saddler Herman Wilde
