For some reason Marvin Hagler never seemed to be a hard puncher to me. Yet he had so many KO's. Then I noticed how badly his opponents reacted to his punches and realized that he really is a hurtful puncher. Is there any other fighters that had/have this power that is not so obvious but is equally brutal? Ike Williams and Duran are the first to come to mind. Also Langford.
Not on the same level but when you mention deceptive power I thought of Pernell Whitaker. He didn`t score a lot of knockouts but he could bang better than he was noted for, especially to the body. There was a reason his opponents stopped in their tracks.
Floyd mayweathrr actually had deceptive power. For one, he rarely pursued kos if he knew he was ahead (like in the cotto fight) and is perfectly ok with a ud. Second, once he manages to land a few good solid right hands his opponents always get discouraged and back up. Even wild reckless brawlers like maidana respected his power. He also had painful body shots. The last few factors are that he had gotten older in the "money may" era, had moved up in weight against guys who were basically middleweights who oiled down to welter, and lastly he had fragile hands. When he was younger his power was much more obvious and he let his hands go.
Herol Graham for me hadn't got a rep for been a big puncher but he could certainly bang when he had the opportunity
Jimmy Young comes to mind. In his prime, that sneaky right hand had something on it. He couldn't ko guys, but it had the snap to make guys like Ali & Foreman falling for feints. not exactly 2 easy guy's to make fall for feints and there had to be something on the punch. Similarly, Chris Byrd. He'd land that straight left of his as a nice counter and all of a sudden the opponent stops with the aggressiveness. Back off. There must have been something on the shot because a lot of guy's sure did seem to lose their risk-taking after eating that left. and then, fall for the feints.
jimmy young could not break an egg, the knock down of foreman had absolutely nothing to do with young's power, it was because he gassed himself
Sure did have George falling for feints early in the fight though, didn't he? Wonder why? And just who else did early Foreman fall for feints against? There was something on the punch to have a guy like Foreman grant respect, which was something he rarely did. What he didn't do during the fight was walk through the punches like everyone expected him to do going in.
As an aside, another interesting bout to watch was Young in there in that 2nd Lyle fight. Another guy he was supposed to lose to. Same thing. Sneaky right hand gets Lyle's attention and he's falling for feints & drops a 12 round decision to Jimmy.
A li hit harder than given credit for. Also R.Leonard. Holyfeild at heavy. Of course P.Whitaker. W.Benitez. (ask M.Hope) lol.
