Decision very questionable, but credit to Canelo

He fought the only way he could have fought -- to survive.

[Edit ---> Canelo did not fight "to survive," he fought "not to engage". That's a fairer statement. Thanks for the correction below from Babality]

He understood the situation, as regards the judges, and he used it to his advantage.

So, I'm not condoning what happened in the fight. Golovkin won the fight.

But Canelo fought a smart fight and he fought a disciplined fight. He came up with a strategy and he stuck to it.

    For that, he deserves credit.

Agreed. Canelo fought about as well as he could have, and the scorecards undermine what both fighters did on this night.

    Tough night, Rummy. Very disappointed.

But definitely Canelo deserves props for creating and executing the strategy. He did a good job with it. As you said, about as well as he could have done in this instance.

I disagree. He didn't fight just to survive. He lost but that didn't happen. He was picking his spots and GGG's pressure just didn't allow him to have more moments but he wasn't fighting just to survive.

outside of ggg not getting a late ko, which i think was very possible with a bit more commitment, canelo fought about as well as i predicted him to, canelo is a damn good fighter.

I had no horse in this race, and if anything, I was hoping Canelo would legit win just to see how the flow would turn around here. But those cards were pretty harsh if not scandalous, even if I think Golovkin had butterflies in the early rounds.

For my worthless 2 cents, Canelo is a bit better than I thought and Golovkin isn't quite as good as I thought. But they both put forth an admirable effort and I enjoyed the fight, despite the bogus scoring.

I don't disagree with this. Canelo never stopped trying, and showed a lot of guts.

Yeah, he did seem a bit nervous early.

The 118-110 is something that I'm not sure can be defended in a rational way.

114-114? Well, GGG landed about 50 more shots in the fight and was on the front foot. I think it's bad, but I'll wait for the round-by-round CompuBox to say more.

On the surface, it looks really bad.

If you land more shots and are making the fight, you should not lose the fight. At least not in how I observe fights.

Fair. My initial assessment was probably a bit harsh.

I should have said "Canelo fought not to engage." He fought like Jacobs fought the last 6 rounds of that fight.

What I meant by "survive" was "don't exchange with GGG." But you're right, there is still a way to do that and try to thrive, not just survive.

I wasn't strictly scoring, but my impression at the end was 8-4/9-3 for Golovkin. I could see 10-2 or 7-5 for GGG. But 6-6, and 10-2 Canelo? Oh boy!

He is. He has improved incredibly over the years.

I recall him being outboxed by one of those "Contender" guys in their fight (before Canelo won by KO). He's come a long way since then.

    Credit to him.

This was my scoring, like 8-4. I have to watch it again.

Canelo played the role of SRL against Hagler quite well. But GGG wasn't quite as bamboozled against Canelo as MMH appeared to be at points against Leonard.

(And, for the record, I thought Hagler shaded SRL in their fight, too).

I was wrong about a few points in how I thought this fight would go but at the end of the day it was as close a contest as I had expected and hoped. If fans on either side are refusing to give the other fighter much credit then I'm going to have to question their integrity.
