    The truth about Chavez Jr

I remember a time when Sergio Martinez arguably one of pound for pounds top boxers today used to call out Julio Cesar Chavez Jr several times a week. He would insult him and call him a daddy's boy, a sissy and a paper champ, preached this non stop to whomever would listen, media or fans. That all seems like a distant memory now.

Everyone for the most part agreed with him. No one but a few believed in Jr (hell, up until he faced Manfredo, neither did I), and why would they? He clearly didn't give a ****, came in soft and doughy looking, would get dui's during training camp and would be very sloppy with his weight.

On top of his lame and lackluster training, his performance in the ring was just as terrible, he was easy to hit and lacked intelligent movement, couldn't really cut off the ring against opponents and was thoroughly unimpressive. He also seemed to lack any power in spite of coming in as a big middleweight.

It was clear at this point that Jr was nothing more than a side show in boxing, a walking cash-cow for Bob Arums Top Rank (Top Rank promote Chavez Jr). Being honest with ourselves, who wouldn't milk this cash-cow? You could just pin him against tomato cans, take advantage of his world famous last name, and rake in the big bucks, easy money right?

Then slowly but surely the tomato cans stopped being fed, and taxi cab drivers started coming in (or is it the other way around?), there after, fringe names started showing up as contenders to juniors protected '0', and the marketing and the build up continued for Jr, while his competition was slowly climbing, at the expense and irritation of boxing fans from all over the world, including Mexican fans who could see right through T.V. Azteca, and Top Ranks money scheme (TV Azteca owns the television rights to Chavez Jr fights in Mexico).

Despite Chavez Jr's lack of an amateur career (non existent actually), something common with Mexican fighters who prefer to go pro as opposed to building themselves up through the amateur ranks (financial hardship being a factor, pros make money, amateurs do not). Despite of this fact, fans became increasingly impatient and the boos and ridicule were piling in, and continue to do so. Fans wanted to see Chavez Jr in the ring with a truly live opponent, someone that would give him credibility. Some wanted to see this for the mere entertainment of seeing him brutally knocked out, and others because they were on the fence about who he was and simply wanted to know the truth: is Chavez Jr legit, or will he always be nothing more than a mediocre boxer at best, with a legendary last name?

A funny thing happened along the way, as the opponents kept losing, and as the hatred (by a few) and dismissal of Chavez Jr by media and fans was at its strongest, Chavez jrs resume suddenly looked great in comparison with other top middleweights in the fight scene. Almost by surprise, Jr had accumulated a decent collection of victories, and a solid resume when compared with the other top middleweights fighting for the alphabet titles. Suddenly, guys like Duddy, Lyell, Zbik, Molina, Vanda, Manfredo Jr, and Rubio had all tasted defeat when they went up against the 'cash-cow', 'the sissy' 'the side show'.

In spite of this, the 'paper champ' as many saw him (fans and media feel his WBC belt was stolen from Martinez and gifted to Chavez Jr) was still ridiculed, and still written off by most.

Enter in Andy Lee, a southpaw boxer, tall and quick, and known to carry decent power and skill. This was the man that was finally going to bring legitimacy to Chavez (in my eyes Rubio was the man that finally had me all in with Jr) and provide the biggest live opponent threat in his career.

Chavez Jr was reborn. After the 4th round, he demolished lee and toyed with him. Walked through his best punches with an insane iron chin that was eye opening. In truth, Chavez looked like a monster out there, I was stunned, I think everyone was, and deep down, I believe Sergio Martinez was as well. For the first time, Chavez Jr looked very good, and able to take on any middleweight in the world.

At the blink of an eye, Chavez Jr is suddenly too big, too strong, too young, too brutal on the body and too much of a young hungry lion, and for some too much, even for a talented but aging Martinez. Martinez who at 37 still is very dangerous in his own right, but is also somewhat of a smaller middleweight.

Which brings us back to Martinez' constant calling out and desperate attempt at a big payday and easy money fight with a Chavez Jr fight. Easy work for Martinez, who is too quick, too talented and too much for Chavez Jr right?

Suddenly, I have a feeling Sergio Martinez should have been careful what he wished for.

Article written by the real jr middleweight, the troll has taken some time off.

And do you think beating up on Lee it is the same as beating Williams and Pavlik, do you really think that 20 lbs over and Peds will be the equalizer against Martinez?

i ****ing LOVE how everybody is sleeping on Maravilla again. I became a fan because of how he pulled out upsets and i cant wait till he knocks Jr's block off to silence his critics once again.

My honest answer, jrs overall package says he wins.

We'll bump this thread soon after the fight and have some fun.

Honestly, I think before the Lee fight, fans, media and even Arum didn't think it could happen. After seeing how much Jr progressed in the Lee fight, they think he's finally ready and I agree with them.

idk but for those who think maravilla is slowing down and junior is looking like a beast, i gotta say that sergio i think was trying to look bad against barker, he was just letting his jab go and he wouldnt use his left hand that much...suddenly he stepped on the gas at round 10 and next thing u know it ends at 11

Positive buddy lol. I defend Jr, and Canelo a lot, and generally love the Mexican style of boxing, but besides them two, I'm whatever about the rest.

My favorite boxer right now is actually venezuelan Linares and rooted to the death when he fought twice against his two last opponents who stopped him, both Mexican.

I forgot to go over the drug test issues, but it was long and written using my phone.

In general, I feel that its ok for people that are still hesitant to call Jr legit, I feel the Sergio fight will answer all of our questions and the middleweight class will sort itself out.

Sorry, its long because I'm practicing my writing. Basically just talks about Jr and how and why people feel about him. Nothing new for the most part.

Very intriguing match! I too saw Chavez/Martinez as a no contest. Now with the destruction of Lee I have my doubts on a Martinez victory. But with this it only means that the fight won't be as one sided as everyone thought it will be a few months back!

    don't know about scared.....

    but he should be worried.

    6'1 180 vs. 5'9 165?

plus i'm sure he realizes he probably doesn't have the power to hurt chavez while chavez has a tough style.

a guy that just keeps coming and works the body is tough for any boxer no matter how skilled.

ask ali against frazier. ask floyd against castillo. ask cotto against marg.
