Yup, the title is a paraphrased quote from the great Jack Johnson, and, when you think about it, he might have a point. I was thinking about fighters from the past and present - those who are defensive geniuses and those who are offensive demons. And it seems that when you put 2 fighters of roughly the same ability/class head to head, the defensively savvy fighter will generally win the day. So I was wondering.....could you guys think of examples where a defensively brilliant fighter (in his prime) takes a beatdown from an offensive machine?
Hopkins hadn't yet hit his prime, and he was not beatdown. Both guys were relatively timid in that fight, but Roy won a clear decision.
I don't know how someone could be considered a defensive genius if they're getting beatdown in their prime.
They don't have to be geniuses, I just meant examples of genuinely 50/50 fights where the offensive fighter beats a defensive fighter.
Well, they don't have to be genuises, I just meant examples of genuine 50/50 fights where the offensively minded fighter beats a fighter whose whole style is based on defense/movement.
Ali was no longer prime against Frazier, he was coming off that long layoff. I don't think 1 round of 1 fight qualifies, but that is close.
