Get a partner and start out having him just throw one punch at a time at you and you defend it however you like. As you get more comfortable move on to two, three, four punches at a time.

Just remember to keep your eyes open and your head up so you can soo the punches coming.

i got this problem too man, i get hit way too much on my way in

try working on this in shadow boxing and on the bag

    step, slip, punch

    in one fluid movement

also focus on throwing 2 or more punches at all times, if u miss the first one the latter ones have a big chance of landing since ur in range and he's out of position

takes courage to throw after u miss and expose urself to counters but this is the way to do it

dont be scared to get hit and dont pull back from punches, slip them and think of ur reply

"always state ur case" my trainer says

It's all about what works for you to best to move out off the way of your opponents punches and be in position to counter him while he's hitting, not just sitting with your hands up (ex. Arthur Abraham) waiting for the other guy to stop.

the best defence is a solid chin, block the punches with your chin.

    remember when you practice defence

    slip>parry>block>get hit

getting out the way should always be the first defence if you plan on countering

Three lines of defence - foot movement, head movement and arm movement. Find which one works best for you. Ultimately you need to learn every skill/technique for every line of defence but it is inevitable that you favour one over the other.

Alot of people cover up and that is great to block a few shots but few guys have the staying power to absorb them. Its VERY hard to do what Wright, Sturm, Kotelnik, Quartey and Clottey do. The reason being is you are still getting hit but you are creating a buffer/crumple zone to absorb the impact.

I don't know you so I'm almost pissing in the wind but try this as a rule of thumb because I always find it works. As soon as the guy has thrown or hit you with 1 to 3 shots THEN IMMEDIATELY get low, move your head and step off.

Some guys just get like a deer caught in the headlights and they freeze. I often scream at guys in sparring MOVE YOUR HEAD when they are in a bad situation. You don't even need specific direction i.e. slip, bob etc You just need to make a guy miss that one shot and that is often enough time for you to step off and away from danger.

Try it and let me know.

    Burton :happy
The Mayweather fight was priceless. Burton blocks the left! Burton blocks the right! Only using his head! :rofl

the hardest part is getting over the fear of getting hit. when you are in the ring with guys try to stay in and feel the punches.

Covering is often done too scared IMO. Consider a riot cop, or a soldier with a shield. If he gets attacked, he can't move back and pull his shield up, as he'll get trampled. The solution is to brace for impact or even step forward, and hide your head behind your shield. Not putting the shield in front of your head but the other way around. Don't pull up your guard too much, tuck in your head behind it instead. You can move your shields (forearms) depending on the situation. If you pull up your guard you will be open downstairs, and often for uppercuts down the middle as well. If you tuck your head in and pull both shoulders forward so they hide your head even more, you are rather safe behind your shield both up and downstairs.

Not sure if I make sense, it's late.

Burton did it against Mayweather and it was working...till they stopped the fight :bart
Why not focus only on your defence while sparring. Get the basics down. Thats how i did it. (still learning)

All of these are good pieces of advice. Hopefully this makes sense and does not sound stupid, but your stance is very important. Are you squaring up to your opponent as soon as he attacks and are your elbows out instead of tucked? Maybe think about this because it is one of the most important but overlooked things. Always pay attention to where your lead shoulder is.
