i am very much a noob and dont ever intend to compete seriously, but i do enjoy punch-up sessions with my friends. :!:

Question being: when a guy "lunges" to attack (crossing his feet, jumping and using his whole body weight against you) how would you defend it?

I even got KD, not necessarily from the punch, but because of the momentum of his body.

Try to excuse my complete lack of defense in the video , i was trying to shoulder roll and failed.

I tried to do semi - check hooks (pivoting out to the left, using my right foot) a couple rounds before, but i over-used them and got predictable.

Couple of things coming to my mind are : 1. guard up, proper defense
    2. lateral movement?

    your help is much appreciated

    Is this the video?

(You just need to paste the YT link on this forum, and it will automatically embed the video.)

You would probably have more luck getting feedback for this thread in this part of the forum: http://www.eastsideboxing.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=13

I don't actually box, so my advice might not be great, but from what I saw:

The one in the red (I'm assuming that's you) looks like he's been influenced by watching footage of Mayweather. Lead left hooks, right hand leads, and a concentration on defence and pot-shotting on the outside. The one in blue seems like more of a Pac type -- aggressive, throwing combinations, and leaping forward with his attacks.

That awkward way of lunging forward while attacking does seem like it would be difficult to deal with. You seem to be darting backwards in a straight line when he does it, which isn't working too well. He does look quite open when he jumps in throwing those combinations, so you could try to catch him with a counter -- even a stiff jab would probably rock someone if they ran in like that. You pretty much did this at 1:15, where you caught him with a right hook as he charged in. More of that would discourage him and keep him at a distance. You could also try bending down at the waist and sinking into a clinch, tying him up and smothering his work, like Mayweather did against Hatton. I think you did this once at 1:35, and he wasn't able to get any punches going. Other than that, more lateral movement will probably help, because he will have to constantly turn to 'reset' himself, giving him less time to jump forward in straight lines and attack. If you combine that with a good jab, you could keep him off balance.

Hopefully some other posters (who have sparring experience) will drop in with their feedback. I think you actually looked pretty good for a beginner.

    theres a few easy ways

1.as he lunges forword just take a step back and move to ur left ..he will completely miss if u time it right

2.check hook and use the momentum to move to ur left

3.another is take a step back and jab it will stop him n his tracks and u wont get touched

    btw i box

    All sounds good in theory but a different world when you're in there. What I would do though;
    1. Pivot to my left using my back foot (right foot), throwing a left hook simultaneously with right high guard then let the straight right go. Always finish with a left so I guess a job or a left hook will do to avoid counter should the straight right misses.

    or

    2. Tap his punches down while he lunges in, then let you combination go. At this point, he'll be in a closed range so a right uppercut and a left hook would work.

I can't view this video at work. Youtube is blocked.

Assuming your opponent is good at what he does:
    1) The most important thing in dealing with that type of style is anticipation. You will want to adjust to where your opponent is capable to reach you and take a step back with your defense as he is lunging then counter him. You don't want to be so far away where you can't punish him after he misses.

    2) The biggest drawback of leap attacks is that you will momentarily be left off balance after the attack which is why fighters like Jones, Floyd like to used their forearm to hold/press their opponents to avoid being countered. So by staying out their range and counter them after the miss is the best solution. Once they miss on several tries they will stop.

    3) Do not use Philly shell defense at a distance. It is a up close/counter hitting style. Use conventional at a distance. You would need to duck under hooks if you want to use philly at a distance against a leaper which makes it hard for you to counter their mistakes.

    4) If you are brave enough to stand your ground. Nail him with a hard power shot as he is coming in. If you land a good shot when he is coming in like that he would prolly get hurt badly.

Do exactly what Outboxer has said:

Especially the bits highlighted in orange. I've not watched the video properly, but your main problem, as Outboxer has diagnosed, is that you're too easily pushed back. I know you're doing this because he's charging at you like a madman, but you should try using his momentum against him. A nice stiff, well-timed jab whilst taking subtle steps back (instead of running) will make him think twice about continuing to jump in. Or better, a straight right like at 8:24 in the below vid: :yep

None of the above will be easy to do straight away, as you'll need to build confidence. But keep practicing and you'll have your friend figured out.

Back in my day i was a pretty cute boxer lol. I would bend at the waste and either smother himself or hit him in the mouth with the zab judah uppercut. Its all about timing. Another thing i would recommend would be to jab. He probably wont expect it and will mess up his whole rhythm. Move before he lunges as well. Mess his rhythm up. Dont be flat footed and tuck that chin and dont go back in straight lines because thats the reason u got knocked down. U werent out of the line of fire. Dip ur head down and to the side. Try not to pull straight back unless u have cat like reflexes because ur still in the line of fire. An if u do that uppercut right up the middle is open dont be scared(not saying ur scared) to let it go. If u get there first u could be puttin him on ur ass and if u do it right with ur chin tucked hell smother himself an wont be that effective.

Depends on how good you are..

I normally react with a better jab or straight... As they are the ones moving in it's easier for you to land and it will suck for your opponents.. good counter which can easily break a nose... and it will put them off doing it in the future...

If you can't seem to react to this or in time then just defend by keeping the hands up and chin down Clottey style... don't stand around and move back.

btw this only works for me when i'm facing a smaller opponent who I wait for to attack. So it's kind of already expected.. and i'm southpaw so that helps.

If they are lunging in with hooks then they should be easily avoided... You can counter back... or just let them keep doing it and waste their energy

An one more thing. Stop rowing the boat!!! When u throw a punch dont take a picture bring it right back to the chin. Especially with ur left hand. When u throw lead left hooks u need to keep that right up. U looked a lot better than him but he was hittin you for the simple fact that u looked a lil scared to get hit and because u left ur punches out to long/after u threw u brought it back to ur hip.

1st observation: You're so busy trying not to get hit that you're turning your head, but leaving it wide open. Instead, don't turn your head, anticipate his punches, keep your hands up and block (or slip) - then counter.
2nd obervation: He's way off balance when he lunges in and his feet are not grounded. This means he will only have moderate power. You should have more confidence in your defense and realize he can't hurt you too much. Turn his awkward balance into opportunities to knock him on his ass. He's giving up so much countering opportunities - like hooks to the body & head and uppercuts galore. If you want to create space, hunker down and give him a good shoulder bump (lead shoulder) and counter. That shoulder bump should lift him off his feet, put him off balance, and open up to counters. (if you're lucky - also disrupt his breathing).
3: STAND YOUR GROUND. You're getting eaten up alive cuz you're too busy running from a messy, unbalanced fighter with no technical skills. Running away consumes more energy than chasing (wierd I know, but true).

Lastly, visualize. Take some spare time to visualize his attack repeatedly - then visualize a revised strategy and practice them in your mind. Do a few different scenarios. You'll be surprised how effective this is.

Finally remember to see your vid. Here are my advice.

Guy in red put more power in your shots. Commit them bc your friend clearly doesn't mind hitting you so if I was you i would hit that mofo. The guy is lunging at you bc he doesn't respect you. I saw so many openings that you could capitalize. He walks into range before trying to lunge in and hit you. You've got to make him pay coming in. Throw some stiff jabs or a uppercut. Move your upperbody to disgust your punches. I hope to see in your next vid that you wack that guy hard. He shouldn't be able to walk in freely like that.

That's what Pacquiao always does. He pretty much runs in and over commits himself. Drop that back foot, take that angle off him, and pop him with a right. If your quick enough you can get off a 1-2 jab right hand.

Also. Guy in red. You are arm punching. You have no weight behind your shots. You have to step as you punch or anchor your footing and snap your punches if you do not want to step as you punch. You're punches have no weight behind them. I know your new so shadow box to get your muscle memory/form. And keep your hands up, he shouldn't be able to land with ease like that. put your arms up. catch, and counter. The guy in blue is so reckless, all you have to do is stand your ground with your hands up and counter.

Remember you can turn your opponent charging. He knocked you down cus you back up in a str8 line and he charging at u so of course u will get push back. When he gets close to you just turn him.
