I am tired of the RJJR haters on here so I must defend this fighter even though he doesn't need it. In the 90's when boxing was plagued with one hit wonders such as Micheal Olijade, Thomas Tate, Darren School Boy Van Horn, and other fading stars ala... Hearns,Leonard, Duran, and the Beast were fading as they had their time in the sun, Whilst training to fight Marvin Hagler the great Sugar Ray Leonard employed the services of a 17 year old Olympic hopeful name Roy Jones Jr. This kid had speed and boy strength and was getting his share of the Champ as well, Sparring with Leonard gave Roy that cocky attitude, anyways we all know what happened in Korea but the next was unexpected. Without any big time promoters Roy father was doing his promoting a silver medalist fighting at state fairs, parking lots etc... but he had blinding hand speed, good looks and an attitude none have seen before; with his alter ego coming in and out he amast a 23-0 w 20 ko's and faced another living legend himself B.Hopkins a then 22-1 w 14 ko's Jones would win a 12 rd decision and take his first title The IBF Middleweight Crown. November 18, 1994 many thought this was suicide Jones never faced a fighter like the menacing James Toney, Toney with one left hook turned Michael Nunn into Michael Stunned via rd 11 ko, He drew with the Body-snatcher only to come back and win by 12 md, Toney was a wrecking machine a middleweight Clubber Lang; On that night Clubber Lang didn't meet Rocky he meet Apollo Creed as Roy Danced, Jabbed, left hooked Toney to a 12 rd UD and became the new 168 lb king. Know lets shift gears ODLH was doing his thing, and so was Shane, Tito, Bowe, Holyfield, Lennox and Roy, but who was the most exciting ? Who was the most charismatic and flamboyant? hands down Roy Jones Jr he carried the sport with his supporting cast, I mean there were other goods fights along the way Bowe-Holyfield 1, 2, 3, but Jones was the most dominate of his time and era, his resume is full of ex champs and top contenders, hell he even was the HW Champ WBA and no other SM,LH has tried that not even Mighty Joe. So I leave this post and say boxing is like life you live, you lose, but then you learn and fight another day. Thank God for all the fighters that have entertained us or even given their lives; But thank God for Roy Jones Jr future 9x World Champion Nov 21, 2009 .
Roy was special. Calm down with the "living legend" tag as far as Hopkins goes though. Bernard had completed ONE 12 rounder when Jones matched him. Not exactly living legend material. He'd stepped up to that scheduled distance only twice. Toney was definitely excellent, but Jones wasn't exactly taking a massive risk with that fight; they were both pound for pound top 5 at that time, were they not?
I can't be bothered reading that, but I assume the gist is "Roy Jones was a great fighter" - and I agree.
Good post. In the decline of his career is when we have seen the attributes and intangibles that weren't apparant in his prime: Heart, Mental Strength, Humility, Desire. Many fighters like Floyd and Roy, two examples, are so talented that they don't need to dig deep in their primes, don't need to fight wars and batttles in the ring to show their heart and true desire to win, because their talents shortcuts them to victory. This is why there is still a "?" for some with regards to Floyd's heart. Well the following fights all played a part in showing the world that not only was Jones an amazing talent, but he does possess all the intangibles that a great sportsman, athlete and boxer needs: Tarver I - Heart, Desire to win, Desire to be the best Tarver II, Johnson - Humility and Mental Strength (that he can get back up, brush himself off and move forward) Losses like that would've destroyed many fighters Calzaghe - Humility, Heart, Strength, Desire to win (Being cut, and badly beaten and ridiculed in the ring Roy never stopped fighting back or trying to win)
I don't think he needs defending. Most people talk about him as if he were some sort of god. "RJJ would have easily beaten Calzaghe in his prime" is one of the most common things said on this forum, even though it is total bull****. A prime RJJ may have beaten Calzaghe, but noone really knows, and it certainly wouldn't have been easy.
Bernard Hopkins showed early in his fight with Joe that a slick boxer, with good movement could beat Joe. He was beating him easily in the first few rounds when he was moving around. His legs are shot though and he can't move for the entire fight, he needs to preserve energy by playing defense and clinching. Even in those first few rounds, B Hop was NO WHERE near what Roy was in his prime. There is no doubt, Roy Jones in his prime would badly beat Joe Calzaghe. :deal
:rofl whatever. Watch this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lnr0HpwqvFM Calzaghe smashed Jones. This is a fact. Any theories of Jones "badly beating" Joe in his prime are, whether you like it or not, only existing in the realms of imagination. Let it go, as soon as you accept the fact Jones could never have "easily beaten" Calzaghe, the sooner you can move on.
just for the record, I like Roy. It's hard not to like him. He's still going quite strong. I'll be cheering for him next time he goes for a world title. It has to happen sooner or later. And I'll be cheering him on when he eventually meets Hopkins again. This has to happen too. With Roy showing some recent good form, this has to be one of the biggest fights out there right now. Who wouldn't want to watch that fight?
I agree, past their best or not, that fight still has alot of appeal to me. I'd pay for that PPV for sure. I would favor Hopkins, but not really sure who I'll be rooting for. It's funny, I used to root against Jones. I wanted Ruiz to KO him, I didn't really start rooting for him until the Tarver fights. He showed some humanity in those fights. I think Calzaghe just got a bad draw here in the states. He fought, and have to give credit where credit is due, he beat both Hopkins and Jones. He did it impressively too I thought. He just did it a little too late and he is now feeling the wrath of all the US Fans who had "hero worship" for those two.
