I mean what has happened with Cotto and likely soon will happen with Canelo, being a champion at the weight class yet enforcing catchweights within it potentially draining the challengers to their title. What are your thougts on this? Should it be allowed? Or do you see nothing wrong with it since it's technically still in the weight class range and the money fighter should be able to dictate such terms..
I hate catchweights...but I'm just a fan. The reality is, if you are not the A side then you have to concede to the A sides demands. If you think you can kick his A$$ then you have to suck it up. What makes me laugh is all these fans saying TITLES should not be fought at a catchweight (implying titles are important) then ragging on what a joke most titles are (which is true).
it shouldn't be. Certainly when it comes down to mandatories, because it's effectively a way of cheating. Can you imagine what happens if we get a smallish "popular/a-side" Heavyweight champion in the future after Wlad retires, and because he's small he starts to exclusively defend his title at a 215lbs cw, and with that effectively avoiding all the big guys. And then his fans defending it by "he's not a real HW but he is the champion, so if [insert big HW name] wants it he should just come down!" It sounds ridiculous now, but it seems to be the next step if this is allowed to continue.
We have middleweight champions that never fought at middleweight atsch just when we think boxing cant become more absurd catchweight should not be for belt end of discussion.
But titles are important and yet at the same time they've turned into a joke which has consequently also turned this sport into a joke... Shouldn't we be thinking, OK what can be done to improve this situation rather than, oh well we're in the **** anyway so it doesn't matter what happens.
