There have always been hit and move fighters and your straight ahead march in brawlers, but recently I am seeing a trend, particularly for american fighters to run backwards around the ring for no particular reason. They are not hitting the opponent, they are getting hit themselves, annoying the paying crowd, and everyone thats watching on TV....... and losing the fight. The Dirrel fight being a prime example, that was the craziest display of dancing, running , falling over I have seen for a long time.... Larry Mo.....and Dirrel....anyway.. After watching A.Abraham fight against Taylor (who is still decent), A.A just stood there pretty much stationary...and I swear it seemed to me he got hit less than Dirrel did. So my question is, have Dirrel and company got it wrong? do you really need to run backwards 3 miles during a fight to have good defense? is there any need at all for crazy leaping around , exessive dodging? The fighters I have seen with the best defense (and I hate to admit this) PBF at the moment, move just enough to avoid the punch , and by that I mean inches not yards running backward. As a last word, and belive me I speak for many people, Dirrel and all you other runner's...no one is impressed....
I don't think anyone is going to say otherwise. There is a very big difference between solid D and running away.
Basically, I agree. Guys like Dirrell need to sit down and watch what what kind of damage this "featherfisted" guy unleashed on the tail end of his defensive work. It's not running if you deliver an ass whooping at the same time. [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_G5v_PNsl4Q[/ame]
Mayweather is a good example of a guy using lateral movement, Zahir Raheem is a good example of someone who runs.
raheem is comedic, but he did beat morales to the punch SOO many times that it was effective. but yeah dirrell wasnt being effective enough, wasnt throwing enough and wasnt letting the guy miss but movign away so the guy wouldnt/shouldnt/couldnt throw. an inch in boxing is a bigger miss than a yard in boxing.
