been watching some old videos of pernell whitaker recently...and although the turning and walking away thing that he used to do didnt look good..he was a defensive master... [YT]_G5v_PNsl4Q[/YT] who else would you consider as having a superb defense ??
remember his fight on sky sports a couple of years back again michael hunter..he beat hunter fairly handily, only time hunters been beat... remember molitor as a hard to hit southpaw..dont remember anything superbly definsive...but that was the only time i seen him and it is going back a bit, hard to remember it excatly..
Dont laugh but there is one guy who people thought had NO defence, had one of the best for a heavyweight ever, Rocky Marciano.
Pep is a name synonymous with defence forever, also alongside the great Pernell sweet pea Whittaker, Winky, Toney for sure, and Jack Johnson.. I don't think Marciano passes my test really as a great defencive boxer beause you did see him walk into a lot of very heavy leather through his career especially against Moore and Charles.. Tyson was very Illusive in his younger days, when he was on the rise he would not get hit with a bag of rice.... his head movement was unbelievable.. Floyd Patterson knew defence too, like Cus used to teach.. perpetual motion and slipping , dodging punches while peering over high gloves... The reverse of this thread (guys who got hit too much or too often unnecessarily have to include Evander Holyfield, when he was coming up as a young heavyweight v Tillis / Thomas / Stewart , Evander would eat an enormous amaunt of leather like he was proving a point or something.. Evander had a great chin....... But like the starter of this thread began, Pernell was indeed fabulous and it took a re run of that Ramirez fight to appreciate what i had almost forgotten, he was an amazing talent.... Nunn was also a champ of that era who was quite hard to nail flush....... very awkward style........
Chck out the defensive prowess Gatti shows Vrs Floyd. That is how I would like to teach my children to defend themselves in a boxing ring.
Gatti was indeed another that knew how to get by with alick movement .. its a rare talent, that is why they fight so many hard fights because they know how to co exist amongst some great boxers and be competetive.
I think that's the right way to say it. The film ain't great, but I think he gets hit with one cleanish shot the whole round? Locche is in a class of his own.
you beat me to it Mcgrain, I watch his clips often, i dont know if anyone else was using thos moves before lochee?
