Not to often do we speak on Defensive Heavyweight fighters like we do defensive fighters in the lower division I guess because their not too often. However, a few come to mind like Jack Johnson, Jersey Joe Walcott, Chris Byrd, Roland Lastanza (think I spelled the last name wrong) and I think I'll add Jimmy Young to that list. James Toney I'm reluctant to add this list because it wasn't his prime weight but I'll add him anyway considering he did pretty good in dealing with larger opponents with his defense. What are some lessor known heavyweights who seem to have some pretty solid defensive capabilities

In his own weird way, Vitali has turned into a fairly good defensive fighter. Using his assets of height and length, he seems to have developed a knack for keeping his head just out of range of his opponents' blows. He just doesn't get tagged much anymore... tho that will change if he hangs in the game much longer.

Seamus, I expected differently of you... like turning up here only to take a sarcastic dump on Tony Tubbs.

I have championed the cause of Tony Tubbs for too many years. One of the great talents the modern ring has witnessed. I am just trying to illustrate there are different styles of defense for different fighters. Some are more obvious, more aesthetically pleasing, than others, but in the end it's about not getting hit.

Talented Tubbs was a shameful underachiever, I bet he had cocaine on his donuts.

I thought Vitali was a good shout for his hard-to-reach unorthodox leaning, low guard, tall defensive skills. :good

Also, VK is very adept at using his pawing jab to push down the guard of opponents, & spoil their own defense.

Wouldn't call him lesser known, but Archie Moore had some good moves up there. Carried his power well tho so might quite be what you had in mind.

When I think of defensive heavyweights I instantly think Jack Johnson everybody else is an honourable mention.

I think Seamus has a point with the Klitschkos though, I think both have adapted so they take the minimum amount of punishment possible and they do it very well.

Jack Johnson obviously and Lennox's defence was watertight when he needed it to be.
