Defensive minded Heavyweights

Discussion in 'World Boxing Forum' started by BumOfTheMonth, Aug 19, 2011.

  1. Are there any Heavyweights who are defensively minded, counterpunchers in a sense of Floyd Mayweather, Whitaker, Willi Pep type fighters?

I guess there arent too many. Im speaking of a great "D" to slip punches, pick punches. Time the opponent.

No good chins or high guards. Defensive wizards.

Byrd comes to mind. Toney, Haye.

Kevin Johnson showed a good defense in the Vitali fight........

  4. Well, he does not deserve the shoutout but...

    Kevin ****in Johson

  6. Absolutely he is.

He also has a great D in mid-range. Blocks punches with his arms, by swinging, which requires great hand-eye coordination and reflexes.

Jersey Joe Walcott for sure. On a much lower level of history, Jimmy Young was extremely defensive, and good at it, and a counter-puncher. Also, SNV.

Oh, wait, just right now? Okay, only SNV is the real deal there:

 If we are actually talking about historically, I like how Kevin Johnson came up before Jack Johnson. General forum rules.

Kevin Johnson is not a good example. Boxing is not about avoiding punches without trowing anything for 12 rounds. Floyd maybe defensive minded but he still outlands his opponents
