Core: probably 100k in the US. This is us online geeks as well Casual: know the top 5 names. These support the majority of PPV buys Public Casual; they know the biggest star in boxing or 2. The tyson, Oscar, may-pac fans that helped with blowout PPV numbers.
You could call the US core more like 500,000. Most HBO telecasts get a solid 800,000 viewers, but the Lomachenko show at its lowest point got just over 500,000, and that was from what I've heard one of the worst numbers ever for HBO. If you're a hardcore boxing fan you watched it, but if you're not you didn't. I think 'ethnic' fans, including a lot of passionate Mexican American fans, have to be considered 'casual' fans. Hardcores don't necessarily buy ppv, but ethnic fans cling to the fighters that most represent them, and will support them even if they have to pay.
Honestly there are about 1 million give or take "boxing fans" in the U.S. The weekend numbers speak for themselves. Take last weekends numbers HBO and Showtime split about 500,000 each. That was everybody. When the UFC puts on an event it does 1.2 million on average, even if boxing or Bellator is on. That's a solid fanbase. If Haymon, Arum, De La Hoya, Duva and everyone else will just put down their ****s and stop measuring them they would form a union and put on great shows together.
I agree but Mexicans only watch the lower weight classes because that's were the Mexicans are. 147-HW gets no love from the Border. I'm going to a fight tomorrow at the municipal auditorium in downtown Tijuana. The whole card is 140 and below.
