I find it interesting that people don’t look at the fact that LaMotta threw a fight and become suspicious that maybe there are other fights he threw, and in turn that the mob didn’t influence other fighters to throw fights in Jake’s favor.

He won his championship when Cerdan quit on his stool, which was practically unheard-of in those days. (In fact if you go back to his original comments after the Fox fight, Jake is the one who claimed he was injured and that’s why he looked so bad. Hmmm. Same playbook?) And in his first defense (IIRC) Jake was beaten thoroughly for 14 rounds and ‘magically’ pulled it out.

Then there’s that one fight against Robinson that looks suspicious. Sugar Ray handled him but that one time … did the mob make out on that one at the bookies?

Broken jaw against Machen? That's the first I ever heard of this. You must mean his first fight with Marty Marshall in 1954 That took place when Sonny was young and hungry as a fighter. His motivation level by the time he fought Ali in 1965 was probably nowhere near that in 1954 when he fought Marshall.

Yeah it was Marshall not Machen that broke his jaw. Machen took him the distance and gave him a good fight. My point was that Liston didn't seem like the type to lay down for fear of getting hurt in the ring. I have no proof but based on all of the books and documentaries I believe it was threats to his person outside of the ring that kept him from getting up from that Ali counter right hand. Again, this is something that will never be proven especially almost 6o years after the fact.

Sounds like Sonny could have used some more Turkish Getups.

Imagine if he had just kipped up like Bruce Lee and took a kung fu stance...

Well if the fix was in for Ali v Liston 2 no one must have told Ali because he was the most surprised fella in the building when Sonny went down.
He immediately gestures for Sonny to get up shouting something like “get up ya bum”.
Whether the fix was in no one really knows but what is certain for me is there’s no way that blow could have ko’d Sonny Liston.
Sonny stayed down of his own accord, why? Who knows.

Actually Ali yelled,," get up! ain't nobody gonna believe this sh#t ! He was right. That was a thrown fight if there ever was one. LaMotta Fox of course and the Graziano fight were good examples. If I had to speculate on a fight in recent years where the outcome was decided before the fight I'd say Mayweather and Pacman. That fight was pitiful.

Why do you think it's fixed? I've never understood why people think that one is fixed.

If Moorer was going to tank it, he could have found a way to do it that didn’t require 36 stitches inside his mouth to patch him up.

Every ringside report just gives it as "Get up, get up" or "Get up, ya bum" The story about him shouting "Nobody's going to believe this" didn't appear till years later.

One thing I’ve noted before is that even though Ali demanded Liston to get up, Ali raised his arms and began circling the ring before 10 seconds had elapsed as if preempting victory - interesting move on Muhammad’s part which belies Ali’s alleged desire for Liston to get up lest a tank job be suspected. I think Ali began his victory dance after Liston had been on the deck for about 5-6 seconds. That fight will always be a Pandora’s box of controversies.

First time I heard of that concerning both fights.
