I just wanted to come and say something quick- lately people having been criticising fighters- most notably Margarito- for being exposed as having glass chins. this i think is because they dont understand what being "glass jawed" means.

The jaw and chin area is full of nerve endings- its the area where senses, nerves and hormones flow, and is for certain- THE weak spot, the sweet spot that boxers will aim to hit in order to knock an opponent down.

A boxer is glass jawed - when he goes down from an abrupt punch to the area- knocking sensitive nerves , causing the fighter to spontaneously drop. Examples include Kostya knocking down Zab suddenly :D, Corrales repeatedly being dropped in his career (though i might add- not being knocked out!) from sweet shots. THIS is defined as having a glass jaw- when a fighter is unable to overcome single or few shots to the jaw area before succumbing.

However- when a fighter, such as Margarito , or Cotto for that matter- succumbs after being repeatedly hit to the temples, face, eye, mouth, nose, jaw, body, liver, kidney, shoulders, arms , etc- dropping eventually in the 9th or 10th round - THIS IS NOT HAVING A GLASS JAW- THIS IS BEING BEAT THE **** UP. EVERY man, EVERY fighter, EVERY legend- can be BEAT THE **** UP, eventually. Jaws, similarly , have been known to deteriorate in their ability to withstand punishment. :bbb:tired:hi:

Ali, Evander, these guys had awesome jaws - and eventually went down from repeated punishment- what say you - is the reason people are saying that suddenly Tony's Jaw has been exposed?!?!?!? :-(

the muthat ****a is may be a cheat- but check it- he s an iron jawed machine. Please , before you label Margarito as having a china chin- check the facts- and understand what the term means- to boxers, boxing historians and boxing fans. :hat
thanks for your time guys. :thumbsup

I don't think you need to be so technical about it. If a guy can take a punch, his chin isn't glass.

Lennox Lewis, for example. He went down twice off two huge shots and couldn't get up, but he took bombs throughout his career of Mason, Bruno, Mercer, Holyfield, Tyson, Klitschko, Tua and so on.

A guy who can't take a punch, is as simple as that. The person cannot take a punch, therefore, they have a glass jaw. Litzau, Khan, Hide and so on.

No, jaw and chin doesn't have particularly many nerve endings, and I can assure you it has nothing to do with hormones.
It is the spot where, if hit, the head will snap back/to either side so fast that the brain will float around in cerebrospinal fluid, crash into the cranium, and shut down for a while.

Regarding Mosley-Margarito, I really don't think anyone honestly think Margarito's jaw is glass.
Someone with a genuine glass jaw is Khan

Better than Calzaghe's and Floyd's, but yeah, they're probably still glass.

Anyone saying Margo's chin is glass is a moron, watch the Cotto, Santos and plenty of other fights. Props go to mosley for dismantling it, not heat on Margo.

A glass jaw is simple, the very realistic chance that any time a fighter gets hit with a good shot to the chin they will find themselves on their arse or knocked out. Lewis is not an example of a glass jaw, yeah he got KO'd twice by big punchng heavies but the amount of shots he took from decent punchers throughout his career precludes this possibility.

Yeah, good post. That is how you lose consciousness. Nothing to do with nerve endings in the jaw/chin.

Slantone, I do agree with what you are saying though, to a certain extent, and that is: anyone can get knocked out.

However it also true to say different people clearly have different thresh holds for being knocked out.
