Bingo. I've also heard it referred to as a "bodyguard."

    Probably the best example.

Burton was actually the top contender for Robinson's title at one point, and reports seem to suggest he would've gotten a shot if he simply pushed for it, but he told the press outright that he didn't want it. Instead, he said he wanted to slim down to 135 and try his luck at the LW title (held by Ike Williams, who he had recently beaten), but an upset loss to Bernard Docusen spoiled that.

Another famous example is Lloyd Marshall, who was Al Hostak's policeman/bodyguard.

What does Corrie Sanders fall under?

He was in the same stable as LL (possible policeman), but Wlad was expecting to beat this guy (journeyman title shot).

What ru talking about ? Sanders was from RSA , Lewis from Canada/UK , Sanders' trainer Harold Wolbrecht , Lewis' was Emanuel Steward .
I think it was Wlad whom was/is from Lewis' stable , but not at the time he lost to Sanders . Wait , Wlad became a Kronk fighter after Lewis' retirement , Steward needed a new flagship , Wlad thought Steward will save him from another debacle (which still happened yet again) .

I think that Liston tried to make an Ali Williams fight a condition of a title shot at one stage.

You might argue that he could have found better obstacles to put in the way, but I am only quoting what I understand him to have said.

Just because Liston said it don’t mean it is right. Didn’t Jim Jeffries pick jack root as his successor?

    He dd indeed.

You seem to be making my argument for me.

A champion can have misguided ideas about the relative merit of certain contenders.

A policeman is whoever a champion uses as a shield, even if they are misguided.

But Liston never used him as a sheild since rischer and kirk barrow were never in line for title shots.

however, using Liston as his ref in one of his hometown fights might make Liston wiliams's policeman?
