Interesting you (rightly) say Bute was overrated - the only shared opponent they both beat. DeGale's resume is too thin to assume he could do what Kessler (avenged) and Ward did to Froch. All of the other fighters you mention beat Chunky including AA, against whom Froch boxed to instruction. It was practically a shut-out.

Don't get me wrong, DeGale would have put up a great showing vs Froch. But I think he'd have been slowly broken down to a late stoppage. Maybe ahead on the cards after four, behind after 8 - having tried to take rounds off - stopped on his feet in the latter rounds. Froch may not have been the monster many paint him to be, but he would have been enough of one to get this win...

In the pros, very close, as both were good world level fighters. Though prob Groves by a fraction. Both won British, European and a World Title. Though Groves also won the Commonwealth title and got a win over DeGale. He also got to the final of the Super 6 and had the mega nights v Froch, though he lost. Groves schooled CEJ, we're as he beat DeGale with ease.

DeGale is the forgotten man of the era just gone.

I always thought the rude boy persona didn't do him any favours. He seemed like a low confidence fighter to me.

Froch would have terrorised Degale, he had his flaws but imagine JDG trying to sit on the ropes while froch unloaded, degale had nothing to keep froch off him

    I don't see it happening.

Carl was a beast back then, but he was very limited. If James could match his will and stick to the plan, I see Carl losing heavily.

No chance imo Froch would have walked him down and stopped him

He was getting lit up by Groves, tentative against a Middle, Kessler outboxed him.

Froch was good, but slick skilled guys were his downfall.

I'd say Groves but I think DeGale has had the better wins. What he did in USA, winning the World title out there was was brilliant. He has the better wins out the two.

DeGales gas tank was poor compared to Froch, hence why he used to take so many breathers in rounds. Kessler and Froch levels above.

Exactly plus Froch had better engine, was tougher, hit harder, had better ring IQ, better up close and at range. Just a far better fighter.

Better IQ? Anytime Carl was outskilled he'd just use brute strength to get the job done. He had a poor IQ.

So if he was being “out skilled” as you say, he would resort to putting it on them to get the job done… wouldn’t you say that is actually good ring IQ ? To realise that something isn’t working and then then changing it up

How often do we here fighters after a fight saying they should’ve done this or should’ve done that and that next time blah blah…

He completely outboxed Abraham behind the jab in a very good performance

The feint, throwaway left hand followed by the right hand to chin Groves was superb

Froch was a gunslinger yes, but he did have a lot more about him than some have you believe.

Great post. First English fighter to ever medal at the World Amateurs. He edged Groves on the jab in their 2nd fight, which as you know is very hard to do. In rematch against Kessler it was jab that won the fight, as Froch build a lead early by staying behind the jab. The only time he was badly outboxed was v Andre Ward. No shame there.
