Sutherland. He looked good on his debut, worked the body, has a good sort of combination of speed and power, just seems to have a style much more suited to the pro game. Age is a factor though, DeGale is still young enough at 22 to be able to start from scratch and gradually build his way up, at 28 Sutherland is going to have to take more risks and try to get to where he needs to be faster, that means less pissing around with journeyman types in gaining experience. Might not have the opportunity to fight for world titles either, whereas with DeGale being with Warren and his age he's practically guarenteed a WBO shot at some point.
DeGale has better natural talents though, in all seriousness. He is faster than Sutherland, and has the advantage of being a southpaw. He is slicker, and more defensively cute, on the outside anyway. I would say he has more areas that need a greater adaptation period than Sutherland, but at 22 he has that time, and if it works out he will be a very awkward proposition. Less slapping and more sparring with good pressure fighters will aid DeGale's development immensely. Sutherland is a much safer bet. We'll see. Will these even be in the same division? Is DeGale fighting at middleweight?
Not sure, I remember he was asked what weight he was fighting at and he said both middleweight & super middleweight. I reckon he'll probably start off at around 164/165 and then as time progresses and title fights come along he'll get down to 160.
I think middleweight would be wise if he's going to slap people. That is the first thing he's gotta change real quick, priority numero uno. You can't bitchslap people as a counterpuncher. That is amateur. He's gonna have to put some real **** on people. Then inside fighting. Tieing peoples arms up is gonna get points taken off. Needs to learn how to defend himself in close with his guard, and then work on shorter punches. They are my two main concerns, other than the obvious that comes with any amateur like whether they have the stamina to fight at a pro tempo and how their chin looks.
Yeah his shots look to have little pop in them in the Olympics. Picks his shots nicely though, good variety aswell and they tend to be pretty accurate, which you'd expect from his amateur pedigree. Like you say if he can put a little more into those counter punchers and work on his inside skills, he should do pretty well.
lets see degale as a pro first. sutherland looks great but how much better can he get, hes been training in pro gyms for 4 years.
Sutherland i think, very little in the difference in the Amatuers but Sutherlan has more power, has great boxing ability and seems to have a great mental attitude and hunger, something that we are not sure DeGaule will have Id be surprised if DeGaule amounts to greatness at pro level
sutherlands 26 Degale has his range rover already. sutherland on the other hand is living in frank maloneys house and takes public transport to train every day thats the **** that builds charachter. Chris Eubank was right. not taking anything away from Degale Id probably have taken the money too I just feel that sutherland is soo much hungrier.
At present I think Sutherland. He is much more polished technically and is much more pro orientated i.e. will go forward, work the body, throw powerful punches etc You never know though. I do think DeGale needs to really improve in a few areas. I'm not sure how hopeful I am with Jim McD as his trainer.
Sutherland all the way, degale is a **** mouth and sutherland could knock him spark out in the pro ranks.
I'll give DeGale a chance first. Everyone hates him already but he might be alright. I just hope he stays active too. Unlike Sutherland who after a first round knockout decided he needed 3 months off. We need more fighters like Matt Korobov. A fight every month so far for his first 4 fights and none of them have had losing records even if they aren't exactly top opposition. That's what a 26 year old should be doing, not hanging about.
In fairness, Sutherland is dictated by Maloney. I don't mind if a fighter fights every 3 months IF he makes good progress i.e. like Povetkin. Its understandable if Sutherland wants a full pro training period prior to a fight BUT only if he fights a worthy opponent that will add to his experience and progress.
