DeGale has been poorly managed from the get go. I expect he's ignored all advice given to him, stuck with his trainer (admirable but kryptonite to his own development) but... more serious than anything inside the ring... he has obviously been badly let down in terms of Public Relations. Whether he has again ignored all good advice I couldn't say... but I would guess so. DeGaes coverage against Groves was simply awful, the worst I can remember seeing. DeGale has several issues when it comes to PR, but perhaps the most serious is that he thinks he is pretty good at the smack talk, when in reality he is so rude to his opponent that the audience isn't somehow 'split' (like with Naz or Eubank) but most definitely tuning in, but instead the audience is now 100% against! That isn't the idea, James! I think DeGale is a confidence fighter - the type of pretend-cocky sort who will always be worse once beaten. Unfortunately for him he extended himself and put far too much pressure on himself against Groves, and came off worse on the night. How could he not? He kept saying he was going to smash Groves up, so even going 12 rounds made him psychologically appear to be the loser. I fear that he is going to under acheive in a big way and I can see his career petering out following a couple of surprise losses.
It shows that the top amateurs who can compete at world level in the olympics are good enough for european belts straight away as DeGale hasn't improved at all since turning pro. He needs a new coach.
I like degale. Not sure what's happening to his career. He needs to be far more active as he hasn't progressed as I thought he would have.
I just don't see how people can say the fight against Cristian Sanavia showed no signs of improvement from his first pro fight. Of course he has moved on, he's been badly managed and badly advised (both roles covered by Frankie).
