DeGale is physically superior, Groves has the better mentality, technique & is much more likeable, despite the terrible tattoos

I have seen drunken pensioners throw better looking punches than DeGale, but he is annoyingly talented

 

Oh Stevens is pish - everyone knows that. Even the Polish dude probably though t, as he got battered by him, "****, this guy's awful and he's STILL kicking my ass!"

It's all about levels and DeGale's is clear.

He clearly isn't though. He's got fast hands and that's about it.

Indeed. A disappointing showing on the part of James the other night. I think it's clear now that he lacks an authoritive straight left hand, and the regularity with which he is being tagged is slightly alarming. That being said, a 12 fight novice isn't expected to reflect the finished article, and those issues I briefly touched upon can be rectified in time. James does have talent. He throws great combinations, possesses impressive handspeed, and has displayed a consistantly impressive uppercut on the inside. I believe James Degale will go further than Groves...but I'm not sure how far that will be.

 

If he only had fast hands then allied with the punching technique he has he wouldnt have won a gold medal & several pro belts

I dont like DeGale but he is a gifted athlete

 

As much as he is a ****:

12 fights - 1 British and 1 Euro belt does suggest he is not shite.

Talk of a world title within 9 months is shite, unless its interim/regular or whatever. Froch/Ward/Bute/Kessler all beat him comfortably. Not seen too much of the WBO German.

 

What about Brian Magee for the interim WBA? I bet he'd call himself a champion!

DeGale has more talent but may not realise it without a change of mentality/trainer.

 

I don't think there was many in the press who scored it for Groves either yet George apparently is miles better because he got the official nod....

A few months later:

"Leave him alone! He's only had 12 fights! Andre Ward didn't do what James has done!".

Is my major gripe. I wouldn't have a problem with him having only 12 fights if he hadn't have been put on such a ridiculously high plain compared to others who were at the same stage he was.

 

I think Groves will plateu eventually. I think right now he's getting the maximum out of what he has to work with, and so is looking a better fighter than anticipated, only I feel his shortcomings will come to the fore in time, which will vindicate what some already think, that he's good fighter riding the crest of a wave.


I dont really know who will go further, I suspect De Gale, only having seen him against Pete the pole, I have real question marks about his style and his defense.

De Gale is a tall guy who tries to fight like a short guy. And for such a tall fighter, he doesn't seem to have much ability to control and dictate range imo. I think De Gale being so tall, means he offers up too much of a target area, a bit like how Chavez offers too much of target area, due to his height, to be fighting like his dad, now that might not be such a issue for De Gale if he weren't languishing inside all the time. You see Hopkins is tall, so was Michael Nunn, but they were still good defensively, however both those guys could fight on the inside or the outside, meaning they didn't have to regiment themselves to standing infront of the opponent, they would do it in spots. Generally they would keep it on the outside and step inside when need be, where as De Gale only seems to be effective fighting from in the pocket, only when he does this he leaves himself open as he doesn't move his head enough, and because he thinks he can block & parry everything, and also goes too defensive at times and invites pressure, he can be hit and outhussled, which is why I think Adam Booth said after the De Gale fight that they could beat De Gale short or long, because De Gale by going so inactive and defensive, allows you to outhussle him at times. Look at him against Pete the pole the other night, how inactive was he? He was throwing far too many singles at times and allowing the pole to dictate the tempo of the fight.

A good defensive fighter has a good balance between offense and defense. De Gale doesn't have that balance. Take Zab Judah, he's a counter puncher with no balance between offense and defense, so he becomes a one trick pony laying back looking for singles (counters) instead of keeping you out by controlling and dictating range, which when you do this, and aren't able to pull the trigger enough on those counters, starts to effects your output and you can be prone to getting outhussled, which De Gale and Judah are imo.


At times its like De Gale has a sparring partners mentality, as he seems to wanna play hide and seek behind his high guard whilst allowing opponents to get off first on him before starting his own offense. De Gale is almost like a fighter who NEEDS you to throw at him cause he cant do nothing on the front end where HE has to take the lead and use the jab etc.

De Gale has an excellent repertoire of counters when he throws, but they are too few and far between, and he allows other fighters to dictate the tempo against him too much.

Probably one the biggest problems De Gale's got now, is that there is a blue print to beat him, or atleast one that can be employed that is guaranteed to give him issues, so he best start improving.
