Degale vs groves who's future is brighter

Pre Groves you would say DeGale. Now it is 50-50. Groves brawled with Anderson and found out he is human. I think in his last fight, DeGale found out he is human. Fights like that are great experience and really tell you who you are as a fighter. I would expect James to start finding his style because of it. He needs to get that 1-2 sorted out.

 

Degales Jab is worse than ****, he needs to stop crossing it infron of his body if he is going to get anywhere near world level.

 

This is common practice among fans in the Boxing world, jpab19. Just as people have done a U-turn and pointed out that he is a 12 fight novice, some have gone from suggesting he was very good to absolutely shite. I would argue that James DeGale warranted being put on a higher plain to your usual British prospect. It was pretty spectacular to watch such an inexperienced pro destroy Paul Smith like he was some Average Joe from off the street. That's pretty much what it looked like on the night.

'I spose the funniest and most perplexing thing about all of this is that those same people who are totally writing DeGale off seem to be the same people who are picking Groves to go far. How does that even work? Regardless of how you scored their fight, it was a super close affair. Some of us may have been overzealous about DeGale's world title aspirations after his stunning performance against Paul Smith, but that's far more excusable than those writing him off because he lost a razor tight decision to Groves and was given a tough fight by the reigning European champion in only his 12th outing.

Definitely. It lacks authority, and his timing with it is ridiculously sub-standard. Marco Antonio Barrera, one of my favourite fighters of all time, timed his one-two with perfection. You didn't know when he was going to throw it. I could see when James was going to thow his the other night and so could his opponent. His opponent saw everything coming from long to mid-range. It's up close where DeGale really shines. The first step in sorting out his one-two is acknowledging it needs to be sorted out because so far he's said very little.

 

DeGale didn't really warrant the attention he got. Yeah, he won the gold medal but he was still a prospect. Talk of being a future P4P fighter was unjustified. That is pretty much why I have responded with the other extreme. I don't really think he's utterly shite, but I do entirely believe he's pretty average.

He's certainly not at the level he, his management and his fans believe. I don't think he'll ever get there.

You've also brought up my major issue with DeGale fans, Addie: the Smith win. You use words like "destroy" and there was no destroying at all. He gave him a bit of a clouting and outboxed him, but Smith was never seriously hurt. The stoppage was a little soft but understandable - Smith had nothing he could do against DeGale.

It was a good performance but it is exactly what everyone expected DeGale to do. So to make out this was awesome or something is just dishonest. Smith is incredibly limited and will lose every time he steps beyond his current level. DeGale simply exploited a smaller, slower, offensively limited opponent.

You need to compare it with how bad Groves made him look. Yeah, there was only a couple of rounds in it, but DeGale only won that fight if you were giving credit for punching Groves arms. And now the Pole, who made him look average again. And just like the Groves fight, people give him the benefit of the doubt when all the evidence points to him not being particularly good.

His technical flaws (many of them) have not been solved so far, what makes you think he will?

 

We can agree that talk of him being a future P4P fighter was premature, but let's not pretend this is an exclusive case. I've been a fan of Boxing for a number of years now, and as you can see, I've been a member on this forum for a while too. If there is one thing you can gaurantee it's that Boxing fans are fickle. You really are only as good as your last performance. For example, were James DeGale to look fabulous next time out, you're going to hear the same **** you did after his performance against Paul Smith. Take it with a pinch of salt.

All I'm saying is that the win was impressive, the performance was dynamite, and it's not hard to see why people had high hopes for the guy.

Agreed. Jim McDonnell suggested that his man has the best defense in British Boxing and perhaps even World Boxing. Absolutely ludricrous.

I don't think this is a major issue at all. "Destroyed" might be a bit strong, but James DeGale thoroughly dominanted Paul Smith and looked very impressive doing it. At no point did Paul Smith look like he was going to win that fight, and I can't remember exactly because it's been awhile, but I'm not sure if I even scored a round for him. An impressive victory all things considered.

Really? I heard a lot of people suggesting that the fight had come to soon for the Olympic Gold Medalist. In any event, even those who favoured DeGale to win, I'm sure even they were surprised at how lopsided the fight was. Paul Smith was thoroughly outclassed. The two combatants looked in totally different classes to one another. One looked like a domestic level fighter whereas the other looked on the fringe of world class. "Fringe World Class" being the operative phrase.

We obviously watched completely different fights so discussing it couldn't honestly serve a purpose. We're all entitled to our opinions.

I haven't decided if they will be solved. I think right now, even with the technical flaws, James DeGale is a more impressive fighter than George Groves. This is obviously going to blow the mind of a poster who finds it inconceivable that anyone could have scored the DeGale/Groves fight in DeGale's favour, but that's how I saw things.

 

with out doubt degale the far Superior fighter,but i can see both getting banged out real soon.

Degale can never go further than groves because the next time he fights groves he is getting beat again.

If the first fight indicated anything, it's that James DeGale could never hope to be competitive with the vastly superior, infinitely infalliable George Groves.

 

What's stupider is thinking someone is better just because he beat them. Do you rank Douglas higher than Tyson?

This was the closest possible win, a draw and two wins by a round.

Styles make fights, and perhaps Groves had a better gameplan. It's not so clear cut.

 

i think degale will get the further but i do beleive he needs to change trainers to someone who can get the best out of his talents and for him to fulifil his potential.

 

Can Groves fight like he did against DeGale every fight? or will he get banged out like he almost did against Anderson when has to FIGHT against world class opposition.

 

Groves has better technique than Degale. Degale needs to learn how throw a frigging punch properly, he is turning into Calslappy!

Groves.

- He's officially beat Degale twice, once in the ams and once in the pros.

- Won the British and commenwealth titles in a short amount of fights.

- He's 2 years younger than Degale.

- Has shown he can stick to a 12 round game plan and not come un-stuck.

- Showed heart and determination in a tough fight against a commonwealth medalist, coming back from knockdown to get the stoppage despite over-peaking as he was in camp for a fight which was to have taken place 3 weeks before.

- He throws his punches correctly.

- Degale is one dimensional, George isn't. Degale hasn't a clue what to do when his opponent doesn't just come forward.

- Groves mentally, is far superior. He's kept his feet on the ground and has a team around him which isn't filling his head with **** - again, unlike Degale.

- Last point is that Degale is going to get rushed. His team and ****** are going to put him in to deep to early and it's going to be his un-doing. Groves isn't going to be rushed as they know he still has many flaw which need to be worked upon and that he isn't the finished article.
