I doubt W-a-rren will throw Degale in with Magee, a fight he could possibly lose. In the world of modern boxing he can't afford two losses in a row for his up and comer. My bet is he'll throw him in with some no-hoper who happens to have a nice shiny record.
I'm not sure this fight's a good idea for Chunky....Magee showed he's peripheral world class against Bute. It's a 50/50 fight and it's a fight i'd wave for now.
Degale had a slip up, the talent and potential is still there. Khan had a much bigger slip up and within a year he was world champ. Might fight a no-hoper next, but should be a quality opponent there after. He'll be topping bills again in no time against quality opposition.
Degale would punish Magee, he needs to push on this year, no time for a tune up fight, he wont be out until September cause of the eye so throw him straight in against a bit of quality. Im no big fan of James because of his attitude but no doubt the boy has serious quality and could be the next great British fighter so lets get behind him.
Magee would be an awful opponent imo. DeGale needs a confidence booster before he steps up. Magee may not be elite, but he has gone at least 10 rounds with the likes of Froch, Bute and Reid, and I could easily see DeGale getting very discouraged very quickly if he's not handled carefully. People are forgetting that Groves and DeGale have barely 20 pro fights between them and all of them at domestic level. They have no business getting in the ring with fighters that can at least hold their own at the very top at this point, and certainly not straight after a loss.
The only fight I want to see involving J-Force is DeGale-Abraham:bbb Either James outboxes him on the backfoot (a la Groves) or gets brutally knocked out Both guys coming off a loss, I would pay to see it happen
Same as he schooled Groves... Oh, wait! Magee's a level ahead of the Groves and DeGales of the world. How can you expect an 11-fight novice who lost his first real test to school a guy who's been competitive with a dominant champion in Bute? It won't happen. Magee can move, he can box, he can punch a bit. Nah, DeGale loses clearly. He needs to rebuild on limited fighters while developing his skills. His footwork, timing and punching technique are all appalling. And he needs someone who can teach him how to adapt in the ring.
I still think the lack of variety in his opposition was key to his downfall too. For all Allegedly is lauded as ''the best promoter in the UK'', he's remarkably poor at matchmaking. Not so much in terms of quality, but you never see his prospects in with any punchers, or sluggers..... Groves is probably the most dangerous puncher a young Allegedly fighter has been in with for quite some time. I'll readily admit that I got the Groves vs DeGale fight wrong.... because in a few fights Groves has been all too hittable and wastes a lot of energy and DeGale had come on a lot quite quickly. I'd said many times that Booth and Coldwell had got Groves pretty well seasoned, in his first 12 fights he'd faced allsorts. A couple of knockover jobs, a rock solid journeymen, an underrated puncher/pressure fighter in Anderson, and the fight in Vegas too. Allegedly just reminds me of Golden Boy, their ''exposure rate'' is pretty high also, for a man of his experience he doesn't half get it wrong often.
Bingo. Even if he'd have got the decision and edged past Groves his level of opposition and number of fights is very poor for a man supposedly ready to move into world class in the near future.
Before the Smith fight, I remember GazOC saying that DeGale was still essentially lacking a core fighting style. He sort of shifted between stances, throwing flashy but low-powered shots and posing. That combined with the lack of quality opposition meant he didn't know his strengths or limitations. It was astounding how much he struggled with an opponent keeping the distance. His jab was useless, he plodded forwards, he tried to pot-shot. Awful. He doesn't have the fundamentals needed to beat good fighters. Fine against the cans, light-hitters and Paul Smiths of the world, not against someone with drive, size and some skill. His rehabilitation revolves around three things: 1 - he needs counselling to cut the arrogance and get his feet on the ground 2 - he needs a new trainer (like Tibbs or Nazeem Richardson) who focues on solid strategy and good fundamentals, with a core style that you work from. 3 - better opposition that will push him, rather than just making him look good. Without those three he's pretty much a lost cause.
Why does Frank want his man to be tested like that after a loss to groves, he needs to be built up again back to basics again, back to the start, thats boxing.. Magee would fancy this now, i see it being a very tight fight seems madness to me i rate Magee over Paul smith anyday....
