One thing I took from the Groves fight is that DeGale is pretty **** at cutting down the ring, footwork is just pretty non existent, although his balance is good and his shoulder rolling etc makes his defence not the worst. A good out boxer at world level is more or less guaranteed to beat DeGale in my opinion now. If you fight him you're going to have a nightmare because he is just so explosive though. The way he stands is pretty good because it's on an almost side on angle and it makes the reach of his left hand deceptive in terms of when he can hit you with it, you can hardly see the actual hand because it's as if it is behind him, and then he just whips it out and it hits the target because of how fast he is. Anyway, in terms of technical flaws he has a few, he needs to use his right jab more when it is actually needed the most, against boxers, so he can break up their rythm, rather than just using it against stationary sloths to smash them up. He also needs cut the ring down as I said before, and learn some ****ing lateral movement otherwise he's in for schoolings against top fighters.
Because Groves will listen and he knows that he can improve. Defail thinks he is everythin and can't be beaten. His ego and people around him make him feel that his talent will just get him through. His jab is shocking and the way he does that little mini walk to cut Groves down even my bird said what the hell is that. Change trainers he needs somebody who will make him work and not feed his ego.
I reckon to get degale a profile at world level he should fight pavlik. Pavlik looked dog **** in his last fight, and degale could beat him quite handily. He should forget about groves otherwise it will ruin him. That fight can happen years down the line for world titles rather than on a domestic level. I think you can say things like degale had poor footwork, which he probably did etc, but the main issue is his prep. Like someone else said he planned for one type of fight and didn't bank of groves fighting well off the back foot. Degale thought he had the fight won before he walked into the ring. His trainer has definitely done degale a disservice. However a fight can be about adapting, look at calzaghe, and degale just didn't adapt well enough to cope with georges style. It was a hell of a close fight, and the result could have easily gone to degale by a round, but it wasn't a robbery. Indecision and lack of adaptability added to poor prep led to his down fall. It's how you come back though. I have a mate who watches ufc, but loves boxing. He put it best when he says, any boxer who doesn't have a loss on their record obviously hasn't fought the right people. There's no protection in ufc in terms of records, so warren bucking the trend and putting this fight on, and the two guys taking it at this early stage of their careers should ultimately be applauded
Roe, on the basis of losing a very close decision against a guy who fought a very disciplined game plan against him, i think it's very premature to be saying he more than likely won't make it, the same as it would be for gentleman George had he lost. The two of them are very green, still with lots to learn about pro fighting. We as boxing fans are very quick to rush in and say a defeat is the end of the world. And the points you make some are fair and some are pedantic. At the end of the day, groves style showed flaws in footwork when dealing with an off the back foot boxer. It's stuff to work on, not reasons for someone not to make it IMO.
Well everything i think has been written.... Degale needs to use his jab more and stiffen it up just as Michael Watson told him too. He needs to learn to adapt and cut the ring off better. He cant just depend on his opponent to fight the fight he wants them too, maybe this is a big lesson learnt.
