Degrading of the British Title

Agree used to love the s****s on a Friday for the british title, don't understand any boxer who would not want to win it out right. I mean correct me if am wrong fury still have the HW title?? No smw holder?? No bantemweight holder?? Butler never defended the super fly?? Satchel still got the fly???

 

The likes of Paul smith holding the British title hostage and the board not forcing him to fight a mandatory or stripping him is just as bad IMO

 

What s****s? Sure you used to get a decent domestic title fight every now and again, but more often than not, they were poorly matched fights, particularly when a potential star fought.

And as for the reason fighters would not want to win it outright; if there is money to be made in other fights why bother? Boxers have a relatively short career, and memories of titles sadly do not pay the bills...

 

Can see both sides of this argument, the british title has provided some right barnburners over the years but i dont think the likes of joshua and campbell would really gain anything to fight for the british strap, there both good enough to beat world ranked opposition now and start challenging for world titles

 

I get what your saying. And I totally agree. But a lot of people are fickle & see a loss as exactly that. Regardless of the opponent..

 

Been hundreds over the years...look back on them. British boxing not all about the big names...armchair fan.

 

the saddest thing about it though, at one time it was a Respected Title,
damn near on the level with a World title, and fought, won and competed for by truly top calibre fighters.

A pride & privilege to hold or own outright, not just the title that has lost it's worth, but the calibre of most of the fighters too.

 

Well sitting on my armchair on a Friday night, I did not see many decent British title fights...

Hundreds you say; please name five that happened on Friday night TV...

I remember Sportsnight and Midweek Sports Special showing the odd decent bout midweek, but for every Notice/CurrieI there was many more Mason/Currie, Lewis/McCrory mismatches...

In fact most of the decent bouts on such shows tended to be for these minor international titles (the two Collins/Nunez come to mind) or just plain non title bouts (remember Watson/Lee?).

I love my 'old school' boxing, and I know my stuff, but today's domestic product compares favourable with anything in my 40 odd years of life. So rose tinted glasses glazes over many a cluster**** from previous eras.

 

Hearn is a disgrace to be fair. Had two excellent British title fights on the bottom of the last PPV that surely did not shift many tickets nor sell many buys. Both could have headlined a Fight Night. What you've got to realise is that the the Hearn's will not put their hand in their pocket unless they are sure of making a profit. That is why the best live normal Sky fights we have had are the oneHs on other people's shows (Degale, Brook, McDonnell, Burns etc.).

This eliminator nonsense is just a way of him getting his fighter up the rankings without any risk. If he was going down the British title route then a number of his prospects would be getting beat. Simple as that. The fans suffer but most can't pull the wool from over their eyes.

 

It was already degraded when fans said it was better than Euro.
