When a fighter signs a fight to fight either above or below their weight class they are fully aware of the risk involved. A lot of grown men on this forum act as if these are not, "PROFESSIONAL" fighters who DKSAB. If you call out another fighter and you feel like you can beat them in any condition and you lose then it is what it is. Here are some examples of mouths writing checks that they ass could not cash:

    1. De La Hoya VS Pacquiao- The fight that made Manny a household name was fought at 147 a weight that Oscar had not made in close to a decade but he wanted to make $$$, therefore the fight was made and Oscar was beaten into submission.

No one complained then and no one complains now about the fight up until the May 2nd 2015 verdict. Then suddenly Manny was too small for 147.

    2. Jones Jr. vs Tarver- Roy was coming off of a technically undefeated rise from Jr. Middle Weight- Heavyweight champion when he decided to move back down to LHW and face Tarver for the battle of Florida. Jones was moving down from 199 pounds to 175 pounds a 24 pound difference. Should he have taken time off? Hell yes! Rushing back into the ring to please HBO got Roy knocked out. Roy should have rested his body and gave it time to build back muscle mass loss with the water weight he melted off.

3.Mayweather vs Marquez- Mayweather was out for nearly a year and a half. Marquez badly wanted the fight and called Floyd out. Mayweather took Marquez up on his challenge and Marquez moved up 2 divisions to face Floyd who may have had ring rust at the time. It become Floyds most highlighted defensive fight ever.
To play devil advocate, what if Marquez had of beat Mayweather? Would he have been considered and PPV star or would it be considered him beating a fighter with ring rust?

Do fighters give themselves enough time to get their bodies acclimated to a division? Should fighters have catch weight fights when moving up or down to "test the waters"?

Fighters only have themselves to blame when taking a cw fight or moving up or down into a divsion that isn't suited to them, but as fans, we shouldn't forget the effect that this may have had on their performance.

Moving up in weight is hard enough, but i think moving down, especially if it is a weight you haven't fought at in years, is not only more difficult, but is potentially very dangerous and could lead to serious injury. It is the main reason why i prefer a fighter to move up in weight to make a fight rather than a fighter moving down to make it.

As for if fighters give themselves enough time at a new weight; i don't know. Someone more experienced in anatomy and sport science would be able to answer that better. I don't have any stats for this, but fighters do seem to get big fights/title shots quicker when they move up in weight compared to 20 years ago and longer. Surely a few lower tier fights at a new weight would be more beneficial than jumping in to a big fight in your first fight in a new division?

    :good
That brings me to Broner vs Maidana and Pacquiao vs ODLH they both jumped entire divisions to fight bigger guys, but the outcome was totally different because of skill. (and maybe something else)

DLH is Pacquiao's most tainted victory. He didn't win just because he was more skilled. (although he is a better fighter) Oscar failed to rehydrate and he was already old and shot too.

    He was a ghost.

Basically we have weight classes for a reason.

I know but that fight was always the litmus test that people measured for the May/Pac fight. As always it was seen through rose colored glasses, then reality kicked in.

For the casuals yea it was because fighting DLH was the only way to go mainstream as a boxer.
