In 1999, De La Hoya battled Felix "Tito" Trinidad in a huge showdown between Puerto Rico and Mexico. The bout set the pay-per-view record for a non-heavyweight fight with 1.4 million buys, until it was broken by De La Hoya vs. Floyd Mayweather Jr. on May 5, 2007 with 2.4 million.

De La Hoya says Cotto-Canelo will be even bigger than the Trinidad fight of 1999.

"It's going to be bigger. It will be bigger because of what Miguel Cotto has accomplished, being the first fight from Puerto Rico to be a champion in four divisions, and especially by how he looked in his last fight. He was strong, he was quick," De La Hoya told ESPN Deportes.

"Canelo looked strong, very quick, a lot of pressure against Kirkland. He could pull more than 33 thousand people in Texas. I think the anticipation of this fight is bigger than me and Trinidad fight. Obviously we have the Internet, advertising, marketing is broader. Many people around the world will be waiting for this big match."

The fight is heading to Las Vegas, with November 7, 14 and 21 in play. The venue will either be the MGM Grand or the Thomas & Mack Center.

This fight will be big but does it surpass 1.4 m ppv's ? I doubt it!

Not even. De la hoya and Tito both had their countries and fan base behind it. Both were on their prime. It was the Pac/Floyd fight of the 90's. I don't see this happening. And if it brings more money, is only because ppv prices has gone up.
This fight can't replicate the aura and electricity of the Tito/Oscar fight.

In terms of pure numbers it could get close, in terms of percentage of interest and population with access to PPV TV in the 90's not even close on a pro-rata scale...... The two back in the 90's were much bigger identities in their respective countries to the two fighters in 2015

...except Cotto isn't half the star Tito was in PR, nor is Canelo at DLH'S level in Mexico. :huh

Oscar has long been cuckolding himself to build Cinnamon up.

He said a few years back that prime for prime Canelo would have "kicked my ass!". :-(

He's doing his promotional job well, but sorry, he and Trinidad are a level above the other respective boxers mentioned.

This is a mismatch anyone who pays to see this should be shot at sight.

Canelo will make Kneeguel bend the knee and quit.

    Very predictable fight.

Tito > Cotto. DLH > Canelo.

Bigger in $. Lower in quality.

Oscar the promoter has to say things like this to hype up the fight.

Oscar the fighter knows his matchup with Tito was one of the biggest in that entire decade. I'd say the only match in the 90's that might've been larger was Pea Whitaker against Chavez Sr.

When tito and DLH squared off, they were both universally considered top 3-5 P4P fighters who were both in the peak of their primes and undefeated.
