By going after smaller men Oscars stolen some big fights from us, look how fighting Mayweather and Pacquaio has affected us:

Mayweather - if it wasnt for chasing a $30-$50million paycheck we would have probably seen Mayweather stay at 140 and faced Hatton there. If it wasnt for the Delahoya money PBF wouldn't be retired now and we'd still have a great talent. He would have made some bigger fights at 147 so he could keep earning. I also think Mayweather could have stayed at 140 for 10years if he really wanted to and wasnt chasing Delahoya

Pacquaio - Well we've basically been robbed of Pacquaio facing the best of an excellent lightweight division. Nate Campbell, Guzman, Marquez 3, Juan Diaz were all exciting mega fights.

    Thoughts?

I disagree, goldenboy have put together some great fights over the last few years and De La Hoya himself has only recently let himself down with the Pacquiao fight.

But, most casual mainstreamers won't give a toss about the weight difference in this fight and will be drawn towards it because of their names in the sport, thus giving the sport more exposure.

The hardcore fans, like ourselves, will scoff at the match up but will still follow the sport like rabid wolves and even be curious when the fight approaches.

So, there might be method in De La Hoya's madness :)

My thoughts are that this topic is bull****.

    Whatever you think of Oscar...

How can the most instantly recognisable name and biggest star in the sport, the guy who generates the most press interest, the most PPV buys, be hurting the sport? without De La Hoya no one would give a ****.

You can say he hurt it but at the same time he's helping it, the last serious fight he was in broke all PPV records, meaning he attracts people to boxing and that helps the sport and whoever he fights boost up.

For Pacquiao he might have blown away some major fights but at the same time if Pacquiao wins this his stock will go WAY up than it already is, so in a way he's giving him a chance to win the lottery here. If both Pac and Hatton win their next fights and battle it out you know how HUGE that would be?, it's safe to say whoever Pac fights after DLH(if he wins) will be huge.

De La Hoya has done a lot more good than bad for the sport.

    Oscar has hurt the sport???

By selling out his fights in record time?

By bringing millions of viewers to his fights and the sport?

By making boxing, if only for a minute, front page sports news again?

I wish more boxers would hurt the sport the Oscar has.

it's only good for boxing in the short term grab exposure/make money scheme of things

again who is DLH most likely going to face after Pacquiao? Ricky Hatton

and that would be a terrible mismatch

**if you guys look beyond the fact that World Awaits sold over $2 Mill PPV buys

what was the general backlash regarding boxing and the fight?

crappy main event ... and all those casual fans went back to not giving a damn about boxing.

so sure DLH grabs a lot of attention + publicity and money to his fights ... but outside of that he really doesn't do much in regards to the ''best fighting the best''

it's all about DLH facing big names, and making big money.

    and judging from this below

"By selling out his fights in record time?"

"By bringing millions of viewers to his fights and the sport?"

"By making boxing, if only for a minute, front page sports news again?"

    it's clearly working.

Boxing gets more interest when Oscar fights.

    More interest means more fans.

This means more people participating or viewing boxing.

More participants mean more in the ring talent.

More viewers means higher ratings which gives the networks a reason to continue to put boxing on their channels.

Oscar doesn't have to make every new fan love him or his fights.

Even converting a small % of the new viewers is more than any other fighter is doing.

Look at Mayweathers current fame level.

The Oscar fight helped give him the platform to accomplish this.

Pac is in the same position.

Besides, I know more than a few people who watched the Oscar-Floyd fight and because of that they watched Floyd-Hatton.

Those are new fans because of Oscar.

Oscar, love him or hate him, is the main guy carrying our sport right now.

yeah and how long does Oscar have to carry boxing? because it's getting to be the same tired, drawn out story. same fighter can't win a big fight, won the Gold Medal at the 1992 Olympics .. his stories been said so many times already, I for one am sick to death of it, and have almost zero interest in DLH-Pacquiao .. as it's DLH fighting AGAIN in the biggest fight of the year ... BORING

well DLH's one of the only big names left, and probably still the biggest name in boxing (at least in the US, IMO)

and he'll sell no matter what, but all that interest created .. and for what .. a fight vs the Pound For pound #1 who's moving up 2 weight classes to fight DLH. if/when Oscar beats Manny, DLH will just continue the trend with Hatton

how is that a good thing? De La Hoya's just conning the fans into buying his over priced crap, and there too dumb to do anything about is which is why Oscar's still around.

I mean DLH-Pacquiao the biggest fight of the year? haha i know I won't watch it.

** I've seen DLH/Mayweather .. DLH/Forbes and upon the announcement of DLH/Pac .. really don't care for it as a fight all that much

did you ever stop to consider that some fans will feel the same way.

**personally I pour it on, i mean let the people buy DLH/Pac .. it'll only lead to DLH/Hatton

and me, well im interested in everything boxing that's non DLH or PPV related
