Judge friendly. That is what I was looking for as far as watching the fight over again three days ago. I remember all the clowning he was doing and the judges never liked that about him and Oscar just kept moving forward and ignoring the clowning. PW was great in his prime, I just did not like the clowning. Watching it over again, I seen that the fight was close and PW made the mistake of not doing much in the last round like others have done in the past including Oscar.
I had Whitaker by a couple of points. 116 - 110 was an absolute joke of a score. Just shows how 'horny' the boxing public were for De La Hoya
Did you like DLH celebrating after every round, especially after he missed 10 punch combinations? The crowd and the judges LOVED that!
Clowning and celebrated are two different things. I use to celebrate every round I won and would talk **** to myself if I screwed up. The only fighter I liked that clowned around was Paez. He was funny. Oscars missed alot and hit. The judges are looking at his output and his agressiveness of moving forward. PW jab was beatiful and Oscar always flurried to end a round which looks good to a judge.
It's supposed to look good if it's an effective flurry, not if he misses every punch and is made to look foolish. Also, the fight was generally fought in the center of the ring, it was a pure boxing match. Oscar was not the aggressor anymore than Whitaker was, in fact Whitaker probably lead more with his jab than anything.
I had Whitaker winning by 2 points I believe, I wouldn't argue too much with someone saying DLH won though, it was a close fight.
:rofl No. You're right in saying it could've gone either way, but there is no way in hell a prime Pea stops Oscar. Would beat him though, terrible style matchup.
I was wondering when you were going to jump in and post. I am talking about his clowning like he just got hit and he is playing like he is hurt. I don't have to explain, you know what I am talking about. He has done this in many of his fights like punching someone from behind his back. I distinctly remember many fans and judges frowning on this showmanship/clowning. What I am getting at is that this could have play a small part in the judges scoring and the fact that Oscar was a up and coming superstar which PW was in the past. Prime PW would have beaten him, but no KO.
It was simply a close fight. Not a gift, and not a clear/definite win. Could have gone the other way.
Definitely not a gift, it was a very close fight that could be argued either way. I've watched it several times and have Whitaker ahead 114-113 (6-5-1), although I have no argument with those who scored it for Oscar. I must say I found it funny when Oscar raised his hand at the end of one of the rounds after Whitaker completely dodged a 10 punch flurry.
Whitaker did not ran at all in this fight. He outjabbed DH and circled at times. Whitaker has every reason to complain.
The clowining had a purpose. Whitaker wanted to frustrate DH and he did succeed at that. Dh looked puzzled and outjabbed. he was not the aggressor. It is a shame that an ATG like Whitaker gets a decision like that taken way from him. And remember, Whitaker was the long time WBC champ.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lFV7B4ZYTPQ&feature=related watch this clip (5.00) and then ask yourself why they gave the decision to oscar de la hoya. Even oscar admits himself. he didnt get the decision for his perfomance thats for sure
