But Roach says it will not happen

    By NICK GIONGCO

WHILE THE main dish on Thanksgiving Day would be the subject of who to fight on March 15, 2008, Manny Pacquiao could end up choking on turkey when he is briefed about plans of pitting him against – hold your breath – Oscar De La Hoya in September.

"We’ll see, we’ll see," Arum told the Bulletin in an overseas call yesterday from Atlantic City, New Jersey. "I was told that Oscar wants to fight Manny in his last fight. That’s what I have been told by (Golden Boy Promotions chief executive officer Richard) Schaefer.

Although the proposed De La Hoya bout "is a couple of fights down the road for Pacquiao," Arum appeared to be puzzled since fighting the Golden Boy owner at welterweight (147 lbs) would be "unbelievable."

Noted fight scribe Dan Rafael of ESPN.com had written about such a matchup a few weeks ago after one of his regular conversations with HBO commentator Larry Merchant and Arum agreed that while it appears remote at this point in time, "it can be done as this had been done before."

"Henry Armstrong was a lightweight who fought at welterweight and even middleweight," said Arum, who bared that Pacquiao will arrive in the US on Nov. 21, the eve of Thanksgiving Day 2007.

Contacted minutes after the Bulletin’s long distance interview with Arum, trainer Freddie Roach was stunned when told about talks of pairing Pacquiao against De La Hoya.

"At what weight are they going to fight?" asked Roach.

And when told that they’re likely to meet at welterweight (147 lbs), Arum was also stunned.

    ""What?" At welterweight," Roach blurted.

"Manny’s going to look like a balloon ball," said Roach, who has been Pacquiao’s chief cornerman since mid-2001.

"That ain’t gonna hapen," the 37-year-old Roach. "What if they meet at 140 lbs (superlightweight)? Oscar can’t make 140."

Meanwhile, Arum is excited over the outcome of Saturday night (Sunday morning in the Philippines) clash between Joan Guzman and Humberto Soto.

The winner gets to be included on a short list that would be reviewed by Pacquiao when he gets to the US in the coming week. Already on the list are reigning WBC super-featherweight champion Juan Manuel Marquez and current WBC lightweight titlist David Diaz.

When he goes to US, Pacquiao, according to Roach, will be joined by wife Jinkee, lawyer Franklin Gacal and executives of Nike Philippines who are shooting a Pacquiao commercial at the Wild Card Boxing Club in Hollywood.

Oscar is still warm from the ridiculous amount GBP made on the Mayweather fight: hence he's calling out anyone against whom he thinks he might do similar numbers. Pacquiao is one of the world's most popular fighters, so Oscar thinks he could make another fortune by fighting him. If he thought the same of a strawweight then he'd call them out... I'm just not sure if he'd call out a bigger man at this stage...

    What the ****

you know this is ironic i remember a few years ago someone took the **** on this forum with Tyson(the biggest draw in boxing) looking for the biggest payday he could get as all he did post bite fight was fight for the big bucks obviously

so they did a funny little thread with Tyson calling out ODLH billing it the battle of the two biggest draws in boxing

ironically it seems that DLH does want to make unrealistic fights in the pursuit of money in reality!

FFS Pac started out at Bantamweight did he not ? Hoya is imo a natural welter proposing this fight is ****ing insane

I just started a thread about this disgusting ***gotry! What the ****! Maybe Oscar should fight JMM first and have the winner fight Pac. Before JMM he could fight a tune-up with MOrales in Mexico City, or he could maybe end his career with an epic trilogy with Barrera at a catch-weight of 153lbs???

****ing Oscar! I'm done with that *****, the one and only fight he needs to be looking for is Winky Wright at 154lbs.....thats it!
