If you could choose only two performances (ex: B(_)ll had me get Hagler vs Olbejas and Sibson) for any boxer, what would your suggest to fellow collectors. Here are a few of my next boxers to buy, maybe you can help me. Napoles. Laguna. Duran (at '35). Nelson.
I don't understand the question. Do you mean the best fights to purchase on film for these particular boxers? Like, for Roberto Duran, at 135, I'd say the Ray Lampkin and Estaban DeJesus fights were best to view, to get a feel for Duran's best at that weight.
Yes! Perfect. If we could all contribute towards a few fighters we know, we could create a short list that could be referred to at a later date.
.........For Napoles, try Cokes I and Ernie Lopez I or II. Christ, that guy was sharp. Laguna - Only seen him twice, against Buchanan in MSG and against Ramos, where he just pot-shotted Mando half to death and forced a stoppage on cuts. That's a good one. Duran- For excitement, try Dejesus II. For a nice look at how he progressed and polished his skills in the years he had the title, get Buchanan and Dejesus III. Azumah? His title winning fight against Gomez was good, haven't seen it since it happened. He picked apart Villasana artfully in their fights, those are pretty good. And of course his shining moment, the KO of Fenech.
Another one for Napoles is the Griffith bout. The mentioned Cokes & Lopez bouts are also excellent. Then go get other Cokes & Lopez footage, & realize how GOOD Napoles was. For Laguna, I would recommend his series with Ortiz. A jab clinic in the first bout, but Ortiz adjusts, & shows his superiority. A great example of a fighter beating the faster, quicker, fighter. For Rocky, I'd also recommend the Marcel-but after getting a hold of Buchanan, the DeJesus series, & etc. For brutal, capital, punishment, there is the Bizarro bout. For The Professor...... first one I thought of was the Gomez bout, as well as his showing against .... Salvador. I haven't watched him in a while, so I'll have to see what I personally have of him.
Great post! I'm intrigued by this as well! Nelson is on my list so any suggestions there would be appreciated. Also; Earnie Shavers Ezzard Charles Barry Mcguigan Thanks!
Roberto Duran: I'd say the 2nd and 3rd Dejesus fights. The 2nd fight was a fast-paced fight (especially in the early going) in the intense heat. The 3rd fight was slower, but perhaps the best Duran at his best weight class. Methodical, patient beating with a vicious uppercut that for all purposes, ended the fight. Azumah Nelson: I've seen some of his fights but not all of them. But I'd definitely recommend the 2nd Fenech fight. The Sanchez fight is a good one as you can see how a young Nelson with only about a dozen pro fights performed so well on short notice against a great fighter like Sanchez.
